Purpose:The purposes of this paper includes creating a comprehensive database of the adverse drug reactions(ADR) caused by commonly used Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) in general surgical practice; establishing a theory based on the summarization of known correlation between TCM and ADR and applying the theory to analyze and predict the potential ADRs caused by other TCM. The theory is expected to be tested and provide a general guideline and reference to prevent the ADRs caused by TCM in the future medical practice.Material and method:All articles, dated from 1980 to 2014, with the keywords of “Traditional Chinese Medicine” and “adverse drug reaction” were used to search in Chinese Journal Database(CNKI). ADRs were divided into two categories by common surgical medicine and non-surgical medicine. Based on the known correlation between commonly used TCM and its ADR, the authors created a comprehensive database including the possible contributing factor of ADR, clinical symptoms on various target organs, and lab testing results of organs’ behaviors by using a retrospective analyze method. The author then analyzed the correlations between targeted organ’s lab testing data and selected TCM, also with the consideration of the real life experience and historical data. The authors then compared the selected various ADRs of TCM and determined the correlation between one selected TCM and its possible associated ARD. The author also applied this method to evaluate the ADRs caused by non-surgical TCM and verify the method based on previous clinical experience. Results:This paper established a database based on the ADRs caused by commonly used TCM and further improved the completeness of the ADR database with more associated information regarding to adverse symptoms. The paper made a groundbreaking effort in collecting and analyzing multiple possible factors contributing variables in ADR for the specific medicine. The variable factors included medicine dosage, patient’s diet, methods of taking medicine, sex, age, and drug combination, etc. This paper evaluated and characterized the ADRs by checking various target organs in the nine major body systems including circulatory system, cardiovascular system, urinary system, digestive system, nervous system, respiratory system, skin system, reproductive system, and the five sense organs. This paper summarized the ADRs caused by specific CTM based on the evidences of clinical symptoms on various target organs in the nine body systems. Partial ADRs caused by TCMs has been proved in the preliminary stage. The references of this paper included approximately 1200 related literatures, and 760 published literatures. Conclusion:The following procedures need to be performed in order to determine the ADR caused by surgical TCM. First, the correlation between the variable factors, clinical symptom of ADR, and lab testing results of the target organ’s behavior needs to be analyzed and summarized into a theory. Second, after verifying and adjusting the theory with previous experience, the theory needs to be applied to other TCM for further ADR study.
