In the course of development for thousands of years, influenced by China traditional culture and philosophy, Chinese traditional medical ethics gradually produced and formed a relatively complete system of the traditional medical ethics through every ancient doctor’s own practice. This is a precious spiritual wealth of Chinese traditional medicine, also is the important theoretical sources of socialist medical ethics. In this paper, as the essence of Chinese traditional medical ethics, "benevolence" is the core of discussion. We proof that "benevolence" is the essence of Chinese traditional medical ethics, and discuss the practical significance of "benevolence" in the current social and historical conditions of the medical field, as the core of Chinese traditional medical ethics.The first chapter of this paper presents the point, demonstrates that "benevolence" is the essence of Chinese traditional medical ethics, and gives the full argument; after the establishment of "the core status of benevolence" in China traditional medical ethics and the carding of Chinese traditional medical ethics, specific connotation of "benevolence" in traditional medical ethics is given. The second chapter of this paper focus on the common point of "benevolence" in Chinese traditional medical ethics and the Confucian thought of "benevolence", in fact, we found that the Confucian thought of "benevolence" influenced Chinese traditional medical ethics, through creation, improvement until the maturity of the whole process. The "benevolence" in traditional medical ethics inherited the Confucian thought of "benevolence". The third chapter explores the modern significance of "benevolence" in the medical field with the contemporary social and historical conditions, as the essence of Chinese traditional medical ethics. We mainly discuss how to find the theoretical approaches of constructing harmonious doctor-patient relationship with "benevolence" as the breakthrough point, and establish norms of behavior of doctors and patients in situation of the deterioration of physician-patient relationship and the increasing of doctor-patient contradiction.
