ObjectiveTo evaluate the effect and safety of electro-acupuncture on urge urinary incontinence after stroke.MethodIt's a prospective RCT study.60 patients were randomized into the treatment group, treated with electro-acupuncture and the control group, treated with western medicine and bladder training. Five patient didn't finished this trial, one in the treatment group and four in the control group. Patients in the treatment group were treated with electro-acupuncture on Ciliao(BL32), Zhongliao(BL33) and Huiyang(BL35), while patients in the control group treated with Tolterodine and bladder training therapy. Before and after four weeks of treatment,the 24-hour pad test, incontinence frequency grade scores and incontinence questionnaire symptom scores were used to assess the patients'conditions.ResultMain outcome measures:The result of 24-hour pad test is different between the treatment group and the control group after four weeks of treatment. (P<0.05). The 24-hour pad weight decreased of the treatment group is 358.16 gram(38.74%) (P<0.05) and that of the control group is 85.6 gram (8.79%) (P>0.05). There is statistical difference between the two groups (P<0.05). It showed that the incontinence degree of the treatment group is lighter than the control group's after four weeks of treatment. Incontinence frequency grade scores of the treatment was reduced much more than that of the control group after 4 week's treatment.Secondary outcome measures:The incontinence questionnaire symptom scores is different between the treatment group and the control group at 2 weeks,4 weeks and 6 months (P<0.05). The treatment group's is lowed than the control group's. It showed incontinence symptoms of the treatment group is lighter than the control group's.Safety evaluation:No patients of the treatment group had any side effect.The result indicated that electro-acupuncture is an effective and safe therapy for urge urinary incontinence after stroke.ConclusionBy this well-designed RCT we can see:â‘ Electroacupuncture on Ciliao(BL32), Zhongliao(BL33) and Huiyang(BL35) for 4 weeks could improve the symptoms of urge urinary incontinence after stroke(with the disease course of more than 1 month) obviously. Its effect lasted for 6-12 months, which is much better than the existing recommended therapy.â‘¡Electro-acupuncture on urge urinary incontinence after stroke is recommendable for its effect and safety.
