Objectives:To organize the theory of prescription compatibility for its academic inheritance and innovation, and to analyze its involved problems, in order to provide methods and ideas for the research on the basic theory of prescriptions and improve the clinical level. Methods:To collect and organize the literature of prescription compatibility by the interdisciplinary methodology of literature, history and Chinese medicine research and so on, and then to classify and expound the concept, origin, ideas, methods and techniques of prescription compatibility.Results:1To sort out the source of concept of prescription compatibility. In Chinese ancient literature,"harmony, combination, prescript, dose, medicine and prescription" are the synonyms of prescription compatibility, which is the combination of medicine with law, theory and purpose in order to fully develop the effect of harmonized medicine combination in treatment. Therefore, with previous and modern research, prescription compatibility is the combination of two kinds of herbs or more than according to symptom and the effect of medicine to play a comprehensive role simultaneously and harmoniously.2To organize the evolution of prescription compatibility theory."Canon of Internal Medicine" is the earliest existing prescription compatibility theory monograph. Monarch, minister, assistant and guide theory has been discussed in this book. However, the law of prescription and harmonious effect of medicine has not been mentioned. The method and system of Liujing Bianzheng fit was first proposed by Zhang Zhongjing in his works "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" in Eastern Han Dynasty with rigorous structure and flexible application of prescription. In Son, Jin and Yuan Dynasty, many physicians wrote books to interpret their theories and invented new prescriptions in such active academic atmosphere. The prescription compatibility theory had been developed well with innovation and inheritance in Ming Dynasty. Physicians in Qing Dynasty inherited the method of prescription compatibility in Ming Dynasty with their own characteristics. At that time, the development of compatibility theory became mature with many monographs about prescriptions. The theory of prescription compatibility steadily developed from simply accumulating experiences to initiatively exploring the principle of prescription.3To enrich and improve the theoretical framework of prescription compatibility original knowledge has to be studied systematically and logically and the essence of objects needs to be explored, understood, refined and integrated further, and to enrich and improve the theoretical framework of prescription compatibility by elaborating the thinking and the method and skills of compatibility under the premise of syndrome differentiation and definite treatment with the application of medicine and prescription. To expound thoroughly, from the perspective of the academic thought and the overall dynamic physicians view, the idea of compatibility in disease, symptom and illness with samples priorities, combined with medicinal properties. Chinese medicine should not only have the compatibility of correct thinking, but also pay attention to drug interactions in specific medication in order to obtain the best treatment effect, so it is necessary to pay attention to compatibility method, including mutual compatibility relation, relative relations, compatibility of drug compatibility and flavor compatibility. For the strict prescription often depends on the compatibility of drugs in clinical skills, so in order to improve the curative effect and suit for complex disease, medication should be related with the priority and patient’s age, gender, physical, geographical factors as compatibility of drugs. Medicine with compatibility can play a synergistic effect so the clinical should pay attention to compatibility skills for its better drug efficacy. Conclusion:this paper includes three main conclusions in the following:1"Prescription compatibility" with the ancient and modern literature can be summarized as:the combination of two kinds of herbs or more than according to symptom and the effect of medicine to play a comprehensive role simultaneously and harmoniously.2To enrich and perfect the theoretical system of prescription compatibility framework, the compatibility related with symptom and the characteristic of drugs are the most important. As long as the diagnosis is accurate, according to the characteristic of drug and appropriate selection of drug, the synergistic and clinical effect can be seen. Traditional Chinese medicine prescription can be made by monarch, minister and assistant guide theory with medical order, comprehensive consideration and foster its strengths. Therefore, the monarch, minister and assistant guide theory are important compatibility method.3Medicine prescriptions should have maser-slave order and for any formula, the monarch drug is indispensable. To define the principal drug not only for primary disease or the main symptom of drug, but also for its material texture and TCM priorities principle, so this would avoid the difference of monarch drug identification on the same prescriptions under the condition of prescriptions.
