The use of digital technology by enterprises to enhance their competitiveness has become an inevitable choice in the digital economy era. However, there are still many agricultural enterprises with low levels of digitization, and the overall digitization progress of the agricultural industry is slow.Meanwhile,in recent years,China has successively issued policy documents emphasizing digitalization as an important direction for the development of China’s leading agricultural enterprises. Therefore,it is of great theoretical value and practical significance to explore the impact and path of the digitalization level of leading enterprises on their business performance. Some people believe that the relationship between the degree of digitalization of enterprises and their operational performance is self-evident and must be positive. In fact, the impact of digitalization on the operational performance of traditional industry enterprises not only varies in different directions, but also has multiple pathways. At the same time, researchers often conduct path tests based on short-term data, which will reduce the validity of the research. So,what are the main pathways of action for agricultural leading enterprises? Will the short-term and long-term effects be different? This is the question to be answered in this article.Starting from the theory of digital strategy, this article constructs a path model of the impact of digital degree on the short-term and long-term business performance of leading enterprises.Based on the data of A-share agricultural listed companies in the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets from 2011 to 2020,a panel model is used to empirically demonstrate this. The results showed that, firstly, the degree of digitalization does have an impact on the short-term and long-term operational performance of leading enterprises; In the short term, the higher the degree of digitalization of leading enterprises, the better their business performance; In the long run,the higher the degree of digitalization of leading enterprises, the first step is to improve their technology-sensing capability and technology-response capability in the short term, and then the technology-response capability can be transformed into a competitive advantage in order to improve their business performance.Secondly, the vertical integration level of leading enterprises has a significant positive impact on the relationship between technology-response capability and long-term business performance. That is,for leading enterprises with higher vertical integration levels, the higher the technological responsiveness, the better their long-term business performance.Thirdly, the stronger technology-response capability of leading enterprises, the higher their long-term operational performance. However,at the same time, the stronger technology-response capability, the lower their short-term operational performance. The theoretical significance of this study lies in revealing the impact and pathways of digitalization of agricultural leading enterprises on their short-term and long-term business performance,as well as the interrelationships between short-term and long-term performance. At the same time,it also clarified the moderating role of the vertical integration structure of leading enterprises between technology-response capability and long-term business performance. The practical significance of this study lies in finding a path for agricultural leading enterprises to improve their business performance through digitalization, inspiring the management of agricultural leading enterprises to pay attention to the improvement of technology-sensing capability and technology-response capability,as well as the matching of technology adaptation and organizational structure. |
