In the new development pattern, the balanced development of the regional economies of the South and the North will also usher in new changes. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei city cluster,as the single core of the north, can hardly drive the economic rise of the north alone.Under the leadership of the national strategy, the Shandong Peninsula city cluster serves as an important economic growth pole in the north. Therefore, how to make the cities in the Shandong Peninsula city cluster cooperate with each other to balance the economic gap between the developed cities and the backward cities, and enhance the economic exchange between cities,is important for the Shandong Peninsula city cluster to improve the economic activity and promote the integrated development of the regional economy of the Shandong Peninsula city cluster. The paper reveals the economic network strength, spatial connection characteristics and spatial structure evolution patterns among cities in the Shandong Peninsula city cluster from the perspective of the overall spatial network, and further explores the influencing factors of economic network evolution. This paper selects four time sections: 2005,2010,2015 and 2020.Firstly,the entropy value method is used to construct an index system for evaluating the economic quality of cities, and its indicators are substituted into a modified gravity model to measure the strength of each city’s economic network and analyse the spatial linkage characteristics of the economic network of the Shandong Peninsula city cluster.Secondly, the Moran index is used to test the spatial correlation of the economic networks of the Shandong Peninsula city cluster, and on this basis, the social network analysis method is used to study the overall network structure, individual network structure, spatial clustering relationship and evolutionary process of the Shandong Peninsula city cluster. Finally,QAP analysis and robustness tests are used to investigate the factors influencing the evolution of economic networks in the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration from a multi-dimensional perspective. The study shows that:(1)the economic network strength of the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration is increasing and is logically and positively related to the quality of the urban economy.A "W-shaped" spatial linkage axis pattern has been formed with Jinan and Qingdao as the twin cores.(2)There is a significant spatial autocorrelation in the economic network of the Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomeration, with a significant state of agglomeration between high and high districts and a distinct geographical distribution, with polarization and agglomeration easing and a trend of evolution from the north-east to the south-west.(3)The economic network structure of the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration is stable, and the hierarchical gap between cities is broken down, gradually developing towards regional coordination and equilibrium, with increasingly close spatial economic cooperation links.(4)The spatial structure of economic ties in the Shandong peninsula urban agglomeration shows unbalanced characteristics, with the eastern coastal cities and central developed cities prominent and the peripheral cities sinking,i.e.the economic network strength shows a spatial structure with Qingdao and Jinan as the twin cores in a semi-ring decreasing pattern.Secondly, the economic spillover and benefits are mainly concentrated in the developed cities in the eastern coast and central China, while the net spillover is mainly in the marginal backward cities in the southwest and northwest. There is an obvious gradient spillover effect between the plates, but the overall imbalance is weakened, and the spatial pattern of economic links needs to be optimized.(5)There are certain gaps in the factors influencing the evolution of economic network intensity in the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration,of which the geographical adjacency matrix always acts as a significant influencing factor. With the development of urbanization, the economic and economic development gap, institutional environment, and information communication ability have a significant impact on the evolution of economic networks in the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration.
