The strategic conception of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road is an important conception of recast maritime trade in China and an important link of the double cycle of China’s economy. The idea of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road has brought new opportunities for economic and trade cooperation, new opportunities for tourism along the Maritime Silk Road, and new challenges. Therefore, the competition between the tourism industry of the cities along the Maritime Silk Road has become increasingly prominent. The advantages and disadvantages of a city’s tourism development are often reflected in the city’s tourism competitiveness. The ecological niche theory can well measure the size of the city’s tourism competitiveness and further express the tourism competition between cities. This paper selects the China Maritime Silk Road as the research area and 16 major tourist cities as the research objects.Based on the niche theory,a niche evaluation model with 28 variables and three dimensions, namely tourism viability, tourism development potential and environmental supporting force, was constructed.Based on this model, this paper studies the competitive pattern of the 16 major tourism cities.Based on the estimation of ecological niche, supplemented by cluster analysis, the competitive pattern and competitive position of the 16 major tourism cities are described, and the development trend and direction of the 16 tourism cities are discussed,so as to help form the core competitiveness of tourism development and meet the new opportunities of tourism development brought by the Maritime Silk Road. The main research conclusions are as follows.According to the calculation results of niche theory and core-edge theory, the 16 major tourism cities along China’s Maritime Silk Road can be divided into three categories, among which Shanghai,Guangzhou,Shenzhen and Tianjin are the core tourism cities along China’s Maritime Silk Road located in category Ⅰ(high tourism competitiveness area).Qingdao,Ningbo,Dalian and Xiamen are located in category II(medium tourism competitiveness area)and are node cities of tourism development along the Maritime Silk Road of China.Quanzhou,Fuzhou,Yantai,Haikou,Zhanjiang,Shantou,Zhoushan and Sanya are located in Category Ⅲ(low tourism competitiveness area)as the network cities of tourism development along China’s Maritime Silk Road. The development of core cities should continue to expand their competitive advantages, while node cities should make up for their deficiencies and shortcomings and strive to become core cities.Network cities should find their own advantages, resource evaluation and development.
