In the context of the rapid development of science and technology,if the country wants to solve the problem of "stuck neck" of core technology and realize the localization process of key technologies from "0" to "1",what is needed is the leapfrog development of technology emphasized by breakthrough innovation.At the same time,if enterprises want to maintain long-term competitiveness,break bottlenecks and achieve leapfrog development,they must also rely on the power of breakthrough innovation.As the core personnel of enterprise development,the relationship between top management team(TMT)and breakthrough innovation has attracted many scholars’ attention,but so far there has been little research on the deep characteristics of top management team.Researches on the deep characteristics of top management team such as cognition,values,and personality still need to be strengthened.Based on this,this paper starts from the TMT goal orientation to explore the impact on breakthrough innovation and its mechanism.In order to deeply explore the internal mechanism,this study introduces innovation strategic decision-making,enterprise flexible management and team conflict management from the perspective of episodic team processes as mediating variables,which represents transformation,action and interpersonal three-dimensional team process respectively.At the same time,the dynamics of the development of TMT are linked with the development stage of the enterprise,and the enterprise life cycle is introduced as a regulating variable to jointly construct the mechanism model for the realization of breakthrough innovation.Based on the panel data of 5606 issues of 1667 technology-intensive enterprises listed on the main board of Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2017 to 2020,this paper innovatively uses text analysis to measure the indicator of TMT goal orientation.After being analyzed through Stata17,the results are displayed below.(1)TMT learning goal orientation(LGO),TMT performance-prove orientation(PPGO),and TMT performance-avoid orientation(PAGO)have positive,negative and negative effects on the breakthrough innovation of enterprises,respectively.(2)TMT LGO and PPGO both influence breakthrough innovation of enterprises through the mediation of innovation strategic decision-making and enterprise flexible management.TMT PAGO only influences breakthrough innovation through the mediation of innovative strategic decisions.(3)The dynamic differential impact of transformation,action and interpersonal process in different enterprise life cycles has been verified,that is,the impact of innovation strategic decision-making on breakthrough innovation is strongest in the growth stage;there is no significant difference in the impact effect of enterprise flexible management on breakthrough innovation,and the impact of team conflict management on breakthrough innovation is the strongest in the mature stage.The above research conclusions reveal the realization mechanism of breakthrough innovation,and provide reference ideas and theoretical guidance for improving the level of enterprises breakthrough innovation.Based on the research results,TMT should consciously cultivate its own learning goal orientation,reduce performance-prove orientation and performance-avoid orientation.At the same time,different management tasks can be assigned to different TMT members according to the characteristics of the task.In addition,TMT should pay differentiated attention to different team processes according to the enterprise life stage to achieve the optimal results.
