Research On The Impact Of Foreign Direct Investment On The Quality Of Enterprise Export Product

Since the 21 st century,Chinese OFDI has entered a phase of rapid development,and OFDI from developing countries can enhance the competitiveness of home country enterprises through product innovation effects.2022 government work report proposes to promote high-quality trade development,so it is important to study the impact of Chinese OFDI on enterprise export product quality.This paper measures the export product quality of Chinese enterprises from 2003 to 2014 on the basis of clarifying the mechanism by which Chinese OFDI affects the quality of their export products,and matches it with the database of Chinese industrial enterprises,the Directory of Overseas Investment Enterprises(Institutions)and the China Statistical Yearbook to obtain the data used in this paper.The PSM-DID method is used to examine the impact,mechanism and heterogeneity of OFDI on export product quality,and to expand the examination of the moderating effect of home country institutional environment and OFDI on export product quality,in the hope of providing policy recommendations for future policy formulation and accelerating the transformation and upgrading of export trade.The study finds that:(1)Chinese OFDI promotes the quality improvement and upgrading of export product quality,and OFDI promotes the improvement of export product quality through the product innovation effect.(2)Based on the different types of OFDI operations by Chinese enterprises,the establishment of research and development,manufacturing and trade sales subsidiaries or other branches by multinational enterprises overseas contributes to the upgrading of export product quality in the home country,while the establishment of information and consulting subsidiaries overseas has an insignificant effect on the upgrading of export product quality.(3)In terms of the type of ownership of enterprises,OFDI by private and foreign enterprises promotes the improvement of export product quality,while OFDI by state-owned enterprises has an insignificant effect on export product quality.(4)In terms of industry differences,OFDI has a positive effect on the quality of export products in the machinery and electronics industry,the resource processing industry and the light textile manufacturing industry.(5)The institutional environment of the home country can further strengthen the promotion effect of OFDI and export product quality.The relationship between the government and the market,the development of the non-state economy and the protection of intellectual property rights all help to strengthen the effect of OFDI on the enhancement of export product quality.Based on the above findings,the following policy recommendations are targeted:(1)Play the intermediary role of product innovation,and enterprises should focus on enhancing their own innovation capabilities,which in turn will promote the quality of their export products.(2)Encourage,support and guide enterprises to establish research and development,trade and sales,and manufacturing subsidiaries or branches overseas.Encourage private and foreign enterprises to go global.(3)Give full play to the regulatory role of the institutional environment of the home country,reduce government intervention in the market,and give full play to the dynamism of the market in allocating resources;improve and perfect the legal system and the protection system,reduce institutional transaction costs,enhance market competitiveness,and promote China’s foreign trade from a large trading country to a strong trading country.
