At present, the world pattern is constantly changing, and the global production network is accelerating the reconstruction. All countries hope to engage in high value-added production activities at both ends of the "smile curve" and occupy an advantage in the global value chain competition. As an important institutional tool and trade barrier, the impact of intellectual property protection on the global value chain status is self-evident.This paper combs the relevant literature on intellectual property protection and global value chain status, analyzes the impact of intellectual property protection in various countries on global value chain status from endogenous growth theory, technology spillover effect and factor endowment theory, and believes that intellectual property protection has an impact on global value chain status through three channels: first, strong intellectual property protection can promote domestic technological progress and achieve economic endogenous growth,Promote the status of global value chain;Second, countries with a high level of intellectual property protection are more able to attract multinational companies to carry out production network layout in their own countries, resulting in technology spillovers to promote their exports and domestic added value;Thirdly, intellectual property protection has an impact on international trade through "market expansion effect" and "market power effect",which promotes the improvement of domestic imitation innovation and independent innovation ability, thus driving the rise of global value chain status. In addition, this paper calculates the indicators of intellectual property protection that reflect the strength of legislation and law enforcement, and uses the trade accounting method based on added value to calculate the global value chain status of 38 countries and 16 manufacturing industries in China.Thirdly, this paper constructs an empirical model to explore the impact of intellectual property protection on global value chain status in the sample countries from 2000 to 2014,and empirically demonstrates the heterogeneity and threshold effect of intellectual property protection on global value chain status. The research finds that:(1)the gap between the intellectual property protection level of each country is narrowing, while the gap between the global value chain status is widening. The intellectual property protection level and the global value chain status of developed countries are better than those of developing countries as a whole. In addition, the global value chain status of China’s manufacturing industries is unbalanced, which is mainly reflected in the high global value chain status of low-tech intensive manufacturing industries and the low global value chain status of high-tech intensive manufacturing industries.(2)Intellectual property protection as a whole promotes the status of the global value chain. In addition,by grouping regression according to countries and industries,it is found that the impact of intellectual property protection on the global value chain status is heterogeneous: the positive impact of intellectual property protection on the global value chain status of developing countries is greater than that of developed countries, and low technology intensive industries are greater than that of high technology intensive industries. At the same time, after adding the secondary term of intellectual property protection,it is found that there is an "inverted U" relationship between intellectual property protection and global value chain status.(3)Empirical results of threshold effect: there is a single threshold effect in the level of human capital.Only when the level of human capital exceeds the threshold, the level of intellectual property protection can significantly promote the status of the global value chain.Secondly, there is a double threshold effect in the industrialization rate. When the industrialization rate is between the single threshold and the double threshold, intellectual property protection has the strongest positive effect on the position of the global value chain; When the industrial rate is greater than the double threshold, the impact degree is the second, and when the industrial rate is less than the single threshold, the positive impact is the weakest. The conclusion of this paper reflects the important role of intellectual property protection in the global value chain, which has enlightenment significance for formulating a reasonable intellectual property protection system and promoting the status of the value chain.
