Guangzhou,as the "Southern Gate" of China’s reform and opening up,has played a crucial role in international cultural exchange.According to data from the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, the resident foreign population has reached 117,000,with the Japanese population ranking second. The cross-cultural adaptation of Japanese people in the local area not only affects the local government’s immigration management but also relates to the economic and cultural exchanges and development between China and Japan. Therefore, attention should be paid to the cross-cultural adaptation of Japanese residents in Guangzhou. With the continuous updating and iteration of new media technology,we have already entered a media-centric society where the media no longer merely undertakes the role of information transmission but also serves as a basic infrastructure.Relevant studies have shown that the media plays a vital role in cross-cultural adaptation. This thesis addresses the following research questions: "What is the status of new media usage among Japanese residents in Guangzhou?","What roles and impacts does new media usage have in the cross-cultural adaptation process of Japanese residents?",and "What insights does the study of the interaction between new media usage and crosscultural adaptation provide for promoting the integration of Japanese residents into Chinese communities and enhancing targeted communication for Japanese residents in China?".This study draws on the Uses and Gratifications Theory, the cross-cultural adaptation measurement framework proposed by Ward and Kennedy,Gao and Gudykunst,as well as the analytical framework of media usage and cross-cultural adaptation relationships proposed by Huang. The research adopts a qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews to conduct thorough and detailed interviews with Japanese residents in the Japanese community.Meanwhile, the researcher serves as a Japanese volunteer in the community, participating in observation activities. The study finds that new media usage plays a role in social support, social capital accumulation, and language improvement in the social, living, and cultural adaptation dimensions for Japanese residents in Guangzhou. In the psychological adaptation dimension,it has the functions of stress and emotional relief, and cultural identity. This paper provides recommendations to relevant departments through the research findings, aiming to better serve and manage immigrants, promote the integration of foreign nationals into local communities, and create a favorable international cultural exchange environment.
