As an entertainment product,video games are deeply loved by young people.According to the statistics of "China Gaming Industry Report" published by GPC over the years,role-playing video games,as the type of video games with the highest revenue,prove the strong demand for role-playing video games in the market,and role-playing video games are one of the types of games that rely heavily on narrative,so the research on narrative design of role-playing video games has become a very important topic for the research of role-playing video games and other types of video games.Firstly,this paper clarifies the definition and definition of role-playing video games by combing the development process of video games.Using classic and post-classic narratology theory,this paper analyzes and demonstrates the similarities and differences between role-playing video games and literature and movie narratives,proves the effectiveness of traditional narratology theory in the narrative design of role-playing video games,and also puts forward the particularity of role-playing video games,such as narrative nonlinearity,interactivity,alienated narrative time and quantum narrative text,etc.These contents that are different from traditional narratology theory have an impact on the narrative design of role-playing video games.Secondly,the narrative design of role-playing video games is analyzed.In terms of narrative structure,clarify the differences between linear and nonlinear narrative structure of role-playing video games and traditional narrative media;Analyze four narrative models commonly used in role-playing video games,and summarize their respective advantages and disadvantages;By using case analysis,this paper analyzes and summarizes the application of four important narrative ways in role-playing video games: text,image,sound and interaction.In the aspect of narrative emotion design,through the analysis of theme,role,socialization and interaction,this paper discusses the principle and design method of narrative emotion in role-playing video games.In terms of the relationship between mechanism and narrative,through the analysis of "good" and "bad" mechanism,this paper discusses the fusion mode of game mechanism and narrative,in order to try to solve the long-standing problem of the fusion of mechanism and narrative in game design.Finally,to sum up,this paper summarizes the narrative design of role-playing video games,extracts the main points of narrative design of role-playing video games,and provides theoretical reference for the narrative design of role-playing video games.At the same time,it also points out that the narrative design of role-playing video games should be brave in exploring new narrative modes and pay attention to the possibility and room for improvement brought by the emergence of new technologies.
