| Mediology emphasises the transmission function of monumental buildings and discusses the various phenomena involved in the process of ’transmission’.Régis Debray considers historical monuments such as memorials as media, introduces the concept of ’transmission’,and includes ’communication’ in the historical context of’transmission’,considering the ’dissemination of information’ across space as part of the process of ’cultural transmission’ through time."The dissemination of information across space is seen as part of the process of ’cultural transmission’ through time.Inspired by this perspective, this study takes the Hundred Regiments Memorial Hall as its object of study, and draws on Debray’s media studies paradigm to explore the function and power of the Hundred Regiments Memorial Hall in the transmission of history and culture and the survival of memory, and to explore the value of the physical memorial hall in the digital age.Specifically, this study explores how the Hundred Regiments Memorial Hall has become a medium in terms of the material and technological conditions that ensure the existence and transmission of ideas and culture, the key nodes and intermediaries that link people to people and people to things, and the channels through which information is diffused and transmitted.Through three months of field research, the author facilitated participant observation and in-depth interviews with five staff members and 16 visitors to the Hundred Regiments Memorial Hall and related institutions, using the volunteer-based research method. The study found that the Hundred Regiments Memorial Hall acts as a mediator, acting as an intermediary linking people, material and information. The memorial hall is both a patriotic education base and an important place of leisure and social interaction for the public, fulfilling the function of "linking" by constructing relationships and communication practices between people and objects.By preserving artefacts from all periods, the museum has demonstrated the power of ’transmission’by preserving the essence of civilisation through spatial and intergenerational transmission. The study also found that in a digital-dominated world, the space in which the Hundred Regiments Memorial Hall creates connections has been expanded, with virtual spaces interacting with the physical landscape and the ’cloud visit’ model providing a new space for people to gather and make connections online. As readers of historical events, people can connect the narrative of the memorial to their own historical memories and form new chains of communication, thus spreading the ’cloud visit’ and the ’cloud record’."The results of the practice of ’cloud recording’.The results of the visitor’s practice become a new element and a new content for the memorials to build connections. However,in the digital domain, digital carriers weaken the historical perception of memorials, and the power of their historical transmission is dissipated. It is worth noting that memorials still have the contemporary value of providing content for communication, offering a ritualistic visitor experience, and meeting the visiting needs of vulnerable groups. |
