Research On Nationalist Discourse Of Global Times Weibo Editorials

As an influential mainstream media outlet,Global Times expresses its views by posting editorials on Weibo.Editorial affects the readers through the discourse full of nationalist emotion,and this special discourse mode has attracted wide attention from the industry and academic circles.The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a crisis and challenge to globalization,and a series of political and economic events,such as the game between major powers and regional disputes,have aroused national emotions among the public.The grasp of the editorial on cosmopolitanism and nationalism,as well as the swing between the official and the market,reflects the official discourse’s reaction and response to the civil discourse.Through content analysis and discourse analysis,this study analyzes the editorials of Global Times on Weibo.On the basis of understanding the general characteristics,Fairclough’s discourse analysis method is used to explore the basic form of discourse and the representation of nationalist discourse from the three levels of text,discourse practice and social practice,and try to learn successful experience from the process of discourse practice mainstream media comment content,for the use of subsequent journalism practice.The research demonstrates that Global Times’ editorials on Weibo have significant characteristics in the selection of themes and attitudes,they express views based on news facts in the writing process.The editorial content mainly focuses on international political issues,mainly involving China and the United States.In terms of attitude tendency,they mostly praised domestic issues and criticized foreign issues.Most editorials have specific news events as their background;Most presentation form is introduction with additional links.At the level of text analysis,the editorial is based on the perspective of national and people,the majority of neutral words and positive words are used,the majority of words related to politics,economy and medical care are used frequently,and adverbs are used frequently.In terms of sentence,the use of questions and exclamatory sentences makes the emotional standpoint of editorials clear and reveals the emotional logic behind the factual framework.In terms of text,the theme structure of the social commentary reflects the national position and highlights China’s active role in promoting globalization.At the level of discourse practice analysis,the special discourse structure is part of the communication strategy of Global Times’ editorial on Weibo.The editorial has three typical news schemas and three commonly used rhetoric.To some extent,discourse of editorials can stimulate netizens’ emotions and affect their cognitive way of events.The effect may be positive or negative.Nationalism is implied in discourse of editorials,and its specific connotation is closely related to the Chinese context.At the level of social practice analysis,under the premise of adhering to the mainstream public opinion orientation,the editorial tries to enhance the national identity of netizens with nationalist discourse.The social significance of the Global Times editorial discourse can be found in the relation between cosmopolitanism and nationalism,the development of material civilization and spiritual civilization,and the relationship between state power and civil rights.
