Infrared small target detection is a key part of the infrared detection technology, and it is a hot research in the world military application. How to implement the fast and effective detection of infrared dim small target has become a very practical and challenging research topic. The design and implement of an infrared dim target detection system based on FPGA+DSP are presented in this paper. And this system can detect dim target fast by adopting infrared image background suppression method, single frame detection and multi-frame screening. This paper firstly introduces the background, significance and current status of research, and then describes the overall design of the hardware system in detail. Then it researches the infrared image pre-processing algorithm based on the new Top-hat morphological filtering which is implemented on FPGA.After that the paper introduces some classic threshold segmentation algorithm, and proposes a kind of rapid algorithm for infrared small target detection based on the combination of segmentation and clustering. In addition, the rapid algorithm is implemented on DSP.Finally, the test results of image preprocessing algorithm and fast detection algorithm is given, and the field test results show that the rapid detection of infrared dim and small target can be implemented effectively by this system.
