Based on the global demand for innovative talents,the urgent need for biological experimental teaching in junior high schools,and the newly issued "Biology Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)"(hereinafter referred to as "Curriculum Standards"),"Biology and Society · Interdisciplinary Practice" is regarded as a major theme of the curriculum content,and through learning on this theme,Students are required to be able to "understand the relationship between biology and society" and "understand the interrelationships between science,technology,engineering,mathematics,and other disciplines",which coincides with STEM education.Integrating STEM education is the trend of biological experimental teaching reform.During the research process,research methods such as literature research,investigation research,and case analysis were adopted.This study first reviewed the relevant literature on STEM education,summarized the concept,characteristics,and teaching principles of STEM education,and summarized the current research situation of the integration of STEM education and junior high school biology experimental teaching.Secondly,through teacher interviews and student questionnaires,we investigated the current application of STEM education in biological experimental teaching in junior high schools,and found that the practicality of biological experimental courses is poor,teachers and students do not have a deep understanding of STEM education,students have a high interest in taking biological experimental courses,and teachers are willing to try to integrate STEM education into biological experimental teaching.Thirdly,by analyzing the basic process of biological experimental teaching design and outstanding cases of predecessors,the STEM based junior high school biological experimental teaching design process is constructed as follows: teaching foundation analysis,teaching and learning process design,teaching evaluation and reflection.Among them,the process design of teaching and learning mainly includes the following four steps: creating a situation,asking questions;Deeply explore and design experiments;Making devices and conducting experiments;Communicate and demonstrate,and draw conclusions.Finally,based on the results of literature research and investigation,as well as the constructed STEM based junior high school biology experimental teaching design process,the experimental teaching content applicable to STEM education in the eighth grade biology textbook of the People’s Education Edition is sorted out,and two sections,"Detecting Bacteria and True Bacteria in Different Environments" and "Making Rice Wine",are selected for teaching design.Through the research on this topic,it is concluded that integrating STEM education into junior high school biology experimental teaching is feasible,not only can effectively implement the requirements of the "Curriculum",but also can improve teachers’ classroom organization ability,stimulate students’ interest in learning biology,hands-on practical ability,innovative thinking,cooperation and communication abilities.At the same time,it provides some ideas for front-line teachers to smoothly carry out STEM education and carry out biological experiment teaching under STEM education.
