Living in the period of scientific and technological boom in Europe,Huizinga was keenly aware of the hidden cultural disease behind the boom and believed that regaining playful nature of man was the remedy for cultural crisis.Huizinga defined the nature of life in terms of play, explained the development of culture in terms of play, and put forward his unique theory of’Homo Ludens’.The in-depth exploration of Huizinga’s theory of ’Homo Ludens’ is of great theoretical value and practical significance in examining and reshaping view of teacher’s role.Based on critical inheritance of Plato’s theory of sacred play,Kant’s theory of free play and Taylor’s theory of cultural play,Huizinga made theoretical innovations and developed the distinctive theory of ’Homo Ludens’.The basic content of Huizinga’s theory of ’Homo Ludens’ includes the spiritual qualities of Homo Ludens, the process and meaning of Homo Ludens, etc.According to Huizinga, the spiritual qualities of Homo Ludens includes the spirit of freedom, the spirit of experience and the spirit of creativity, the process of play is accompanied by the balance of freedom and rules, and the interweaving of emotion and reason, while the meaning of play includes expression of individuality of Homo Ludens, formation of play community and creation of social culture.Taking Huizinga’s theory of ’Homo Ludens’ as a perspective,we found the following problems in the current view of teacher’s role: the emphasis on the instrumental role of teachers leads to the neglect of teachers’ autonomy;the emphasis on the perfectionist role of teachers leads to the neglect of teachers’ real situation;the emphasis on the managerial role of teachers leads to the alienation of teacher-student relationship.Applying Huizinga’s theory of ’Homo Ludens’ to examine reasons for the above-mentioned deviations in the view of teacher’s role,it was found that the main reasons include the following:utilitarianism invades schools, resulting in distortion of purpose of education and mechanisation of educational process;the image of the group obscures the image of the individual, emphasising the group orientation and the commonality of teachers;managerialism results in teacher-student confrontation, which leads to alienation of management concepts and single subject of management power. In the perspective of the theory of ’Homo Ludens’,teachers should be autonomous, authentic and equal Homo Ludens.Drawing on Huizinga’s theory of ’Homo Ludens’,the construction of teacher’s role as Homo Ludens can start from the following aspects: firstly, creating free play time and space, clarifying teachers’ work responsibilities and giving them flexible autonomy;secondly, paying attention to teachers’ unique experiences, valuing teachers’ individual differences and encouraging teachers’ emotional expression;thirdly, teachers and students participating in the management process together, optimising the class management system and promoting equal interaction between teachers and students.
