With the deepening of economic globalisation and the increasingly frequent cultural and political exchanges between countries,the field of education is also changing and developing through exchanges and learning.On the basis of our national conditions and thorough research on international core literacy,China has constructed a localised core literacy development system for Chinese students with Chinese characteristics.In the 2017 GCSE History Curriculum Standards,the five core subject qualities that the subject of history should develop up for students are clearly stated.Based on the above background,cultivating and developing students’ core literacy in the subject of history has become the goal of history teaching,and establishing moral education has become the fundamental task of history teaching.As the highest level of the five core literacies in history,it is both a concentrated expression of the nurturing value of the subject and the pursuit of the value of history teaching.As an indispensable and active factor in history teaching,historical figures contain many valuable spiritual qualities and strong patriotic feelings,and embody an extremely rich type of family values,making them an important resource for the cultivation of family literacy.At the same time,the fun,demonstrative nature of teaching historical figures and the natural tendency of students to develop empathetic understanding of historical figures makes teaching historical figures an effective way of nurturing students’ sense of family and country.It follows that it is necessary and feasible to nurture and develop students’ core literacy of family values through the teaching of historical figures.Based on the definition and connotation of the core concepts of historical figures,the teaching of historical figures,family and country feelings and familial literacy,this article firstly uses the interpretation of the connotation of familial literacy in the curriculum standards as a basis for an in-depth analysis of the various elements of familialism embedded in historical figures and argues for the importance of cultivating familial literacy in the teaching of historical figures in the light of the advantages of teaching historical figures.Then,using a key secondary school in Jiangxi Province as the target,the current situation of cultivating family and country feelings in the teaching of historical figures is explored through a combination of questionnaires and interviews,and based on this,targeted suggestions for teaching improvement are put forward in three major areas:tapping into the resources of the characters,optimising the teaching process and focusing on post-lesson extension.Finally,the lesson "The Quest for a National Way Out and the Intensification of the Aggression of the Powers" is used as a case study to give a concrete demonstration.
