In 1964-1965,a vigorous student movement broke out in the University of California,Berkeley,a famous public university in the United States. In the history of the University of California in the second half of the 20 th century and even in the history of American higher education, the campus student movement has a very important historical significance. The outbreak of the student movement in the University of California,Berkeley in1964-1965 has its specific background and internal motivation. The "baby boom" generation of young people born after World War II witnessed the prosperity of the American economy.Material prosperity shaped their optimistic and upward group character, but also planted the seeds of resistance to external constraints. The civil rights movement in the 1950 s inspired young students to realize their political and educational aspirations through their own power. The social and cultural atmosphere against the tradition and mainstream also provided ideological weapons for the campus movement of young students. In the case of the University of California,Berkeley, there has been a tendency toward radical studentism since the 1930s;After the Second World War,the rigid management system within the school, the imbalance between the development of different disciplines, and the school’s emphasis on scientific research over teaching intensified, which increasingly caused dissatisfaction among students. The above internal and external factors contributed to the outbreak of the massive student movement.According to the time trend of the movement, the student movement lasting several months can be roughly divided into three macro stages, which are: The fuse and outbreak of the movement(July to September 31,1964),the tortuous progress of the movement(October 1,1964 to November 19,1964),the end of the movement(November 20,1964 to January 3,1964)and the seven micro stages are: The fuse of the movement(July--September 14),the outbreak of the movement(September 14--September 31),the development and setbacks of the student movement(October 1--October 2),the normalization of the student movement(October 3--October 15),the dilemma and solution of the student movement(October 16--November 19),the climax of the student movement(11 20-3 December)and the student movement won the final victory(3 December-3 January). The student movement, which was sparked by the university’s "ban on political activities on campus," ended in the university’s compromise and the students’ victory. The student movement of 1964-1965 had a profound impact on the University of California at Berkeley and on higher education in the United States as a whole. From within Berkeley, the student movement has fostered good teacher-student relations, created a more relaxed campus environment, and awakened students’ sense of responsibility. At the same time, the movement also provided important impetus for the comprehensive push for the reform of the system of the large and diverse universities in the United States.
