Empathy ability refers to one’s ability to understand others’ viewpoints,thoughts and emotions.For middle school teachers,the key lies in whether they can understand students and parents and consider problems from their perspective.The ability of empathy is very important to the career satisfaction of middle school teachers.Psychobiographical therapy mainly refers to the process of telling one’s own life story so as to find the bright spots in the course of life,so as to make the client change himself and transform the life story of obstacles into a good life story.Psychobiographical therapy can effectively improve individuals’ empathy ability,but it is rarely used in group counseling.This study applies psychobiographical therapy to group counseling and verifies its effectiveness in improving empathy ability.The purpose of this study was to investigate the current situation of empathy competence level of middle school teachers,investigate the correlation between empathy competence level and career satisfaction,and explore the intervention effect of group counseling program based on psychobiographical therapy on empathy competence level.The research process: mainly divided into status investigation and group counseling intervention research two parts.A total of 337 teachers(170 male and 167 female)from county experimental Middle School were selected to distribute the Chinese version of interpersonal Response Indicator Scale and Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire(short form).The subjects whose empathy ability was in the bottom 27% were selected and randomly assigned to experiment group 1(reading group),experiment group 2(video group)and control group(10 subjects).In the experiment,according to the steps of psychobiographical therapy,the experimental group told their own life stories in the first stage,and their partners retold their life stories in the second stage.In the third stage,the treatment methods of the experimental group were different,and the reading group took the way of reading celebrity stories.The video group watched the edited video "My Father and Mother",which is the life story of others.The fourth stage was to review their own life story in the way of writing.A control group focused on sharing someone else’s life story,and saw whether their level of empathy changed in different ways.Results: The level of empathy ability of teachers in the county was low,and there was a significant positive correlation between the level of empathy ability and career satisfaction(p<0.05).Gender and years of employment had an impact on the level of empathy ability(p<0.05).After the end of the experiment,there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group(p<0.05),and the empathy ability of the experimental group was significantly improved,that is,the group counseling program based on psychobiographical therapy was effective,but there was no significant difference between different ways of psychobiographical therapy(p=0.08).Even reading biographies of celebrities and watching videos of other people’s life stories can improve empathy.But overall,people who read biographies of famous people scored higher on empathy.It is concluded that the group counseling program based on psychobiographical therapy is effective,especially it significantly improves the idea selection ability of the subjects.Compared with watching videos,the intervention effect of reading celebrity biographies on the empathy ability of the subjects is better.This thesis puts forward some suggestions for middle school teachers to improve their empathy ability from various perspectives,and suggests to promote the application of psychobiographical therapy in group counseling.
