Mahjong has important regulatory significance for rural areas in Chongqing, where cultural resources are scarce. However, for this common life issue,it cannot be understood solely from the perspective of games,as it contains various principles of social interaction between people.Taking Chongqing Y Village as a case, this paper, through field research and literature collection, focuses on playing mahjong, describes the social exchanges in the village’s mahjong parlors, and reveals the characteristics and impact of such social interaction. The study found that the rural members left behind constitute the main participants in the mahjong hall, and playing mahjong is their usual arrangement in addition to their domestic and agricultural activities. The interaction between them reflects the logic of interaction in the vernacular society, from the invisible rules of entry of acquaintances, the choice of place centered on "self",the maintenance of face in the invitation to the mahjong court to the exchange of righteousness and profit. The different modes of living together due to the relationship between familiar and raw people are found in all aspects of "mahjong".This kind of social interaction based on mahjong establishes and broadens people’s relationship network, and to a certain extent alleviates the alienation caused by the tendency of atomization within the village. The mahjong circle, based on the mahjong parlor, provides emotional support for each other in the absence of family members, and gives a layer of familiarity to the relationships within the circle through the tracing of past social relationships.
