“When number lacks form, there is little intuition, and when form is few,it is difficult to get into the details.” Hua Luogeng’s words profoundly illustrate the importance of combining numbers and shapes. At primary school level, the idea of combining numbers and shapes is an important way of thinking.Teachers should have a solid grasp of it in order to implement the requirements of the new curriculum standards for teaching objectives, teaching content, examination questions and multiple assessments. This study focuses on Year 5,where the curriculum and knowledge become more difficult and the number of abstract concepts increases.Although most individual students have the ability to think deductively and reason, they still need concrete support when thinking. The idea of combining numbers and shapes enables students to understand the context of their knowledge and optimise their cognitive structure through the operation of ’combining’.Therefore,it is important to study the application of the idea of combining numbers and shapes in the teaching of Mathematics in Year 5.In this paper, the theoretical discussion of the idea of combining numbers and shapes with mathematics teaching is first conducted. On this basis, the fifth grade students and teachers of School H in Chengdu are taken as the targets of investigation, and through the distribution of questionnaires and the combination of interviews, the analysis of the application of the idea of combining numbers and shapes in the teaching of the fifth grade in School H is carried out from five aspects: teachers’ and students’ awareness of the idea of combining numbers and shapes, students’ attitudes towards the idea of combining numbers and shapes in problem solving, teachers’ application of the idea of combining numbers and shapes, students’ application of the idea of combining numbers and shapes, and students’ confusion in applying the idea of combining numbers and shapes in problem solving. The results of the study showed that the problems of combining number and shape in Year 5 in School H included: teachers’ general understanding of the meaning of combining number and shape;students’ lack of initiative in solving problems by combining number and shape;teachers’ disconnect between knowledge and action in teaching combining number and shape;and students’ misconceptions in applying combining number and shape. The reasons for these problems are: teachers’ lack of knowledge of the content of the idea of combining numbers and shapes;teachers’ lack of positive feedback to students on the use of the idea of combining numbers and shapes;teachers’ lack of experience in teaching the idea of combining numbers and shapes;teachers’ lack of guidance to students on the method of combining numbers and shapes;and the lack of special seminars and exchanges on the idea of combining numbers and shapes within the school.Based on the analysis of the problems and causes in the application of the idea of combining numbers and shapes, this article puts forward targeted strategies for the application of the idea of combining numbers and shapes in the teaching of mathematics in Primary 5,including: fully exploring the standards and teaching materials,so that the idea of combining numbers and shapes has its origin;based on the development objectives of the ability of combining numbers and shapes in Primary 5,filling the growth fault;combining guidance and feedback to promote students’ deep experience;penetrating the idea of combining numbers and shapes in multiple ways to make learning more exciting;actively discussing in schools to deepen the understanding of the idea of combining numbers and shapes;establishing typical models to enrich the experience of applying the idea of combining numbers and shapes.
