The European Cup football tournament, known as the "little World Cup",is one of the world’s top competitions and an important platform for exploring the characteristics and development trends of world football.Receiving is one of the key offensive techniques in football, receiving is crucial for controlling the ball and executing tactics, and its technical proficiency directly affects a player’s performance and the team’s success. This article explores and analyzes the characteristics of receiving during the 2020 European Cup football tournament to understand the latest trends and application of receiving techniques among European teams, and provide some reference for the development of Chinese football. The study used research methods such as literature review, video observation, expert interviews, surveys, and mathematical statistics to study the quantity and quality of receiving, the usage of receiving positions in specific scenarios, player behavior after receiving, and the characteristics of failed receptions. Results show that:(1)The total number of receptions during this year’s European Cup football tournament was 35321,the number of receptions fluctuated in a "W" shape over time, with more receptions in certain indicators such as receiving before passes, midfield receptions,slow-to-medium speed receptions, ground balls,short-range passes, and non-confrontational receptions.(2)The average success rate of receptions was as high as 94.88%,with no significant difference in success rates between different time periods. The success rate was higher for receiving lateral passes and using the instep, medial side, outside of the foot.As players advanced towards the opponent’s goal, the height of the ball’s trajectory increased, and the speed and distance of the ball increased, the degree of confrontation increased, resulting in a gradual decrease in the success rate;.(3)The complexity of receiving scenarios significantly decreases the frequency of using the inside of the foot, while the frequency of using other receiving positions increases to varying degrees in specific receiving contexts. The frequency of using the front part of the foot’s arch, chest, and head for receiving significantly increases in the front court and for high balls;the frequency of using the front part of the foot’s arch and chest significantly increases with the distance of the incoming ball for receiving;and in confrontation situations, the frequency of using other positions besides the inside of the foot significantly increases.(4)Players’ body orientation after receiving was primarily directed towards the opponent’s goal, but the frequency of receiving while facing the goal decreased as the ball advanced and confrontation increased. Most European Cup players received the ball using a push technique, but due to compressed space, the frequency of stopping the ball increased. After receiving the ball, over 80% of players chose to pass, with more frequent use of dribbling, breakthroughs, and shots in the front court and in confrontation.(5)The main reasons for failed receptions were excessive reception size and improper reception direction, with the main activities during failed receptions being high-speed,medium-speed,and stationary confrontations.
