Reading whole books is extremely important for senior secondary students to improve their core language literacy, inherit and carry forward the excellent Chinese culture, enhance their cultural confidence and strengthen their cultural awareness.Since the Ministry of Education released the "General High School Language Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)" and proposed the task group of "Whole Book Reading and Seminar",whole book reading has entered language teaching as a curriculum, and is increasingly valued by frontline language teachers. In "How to Read a Book",Adler offers his insights on the purpose of reading, the nature of reading, attitudes to reading and methods of reading, which also constitute Adler’s ideology of reading. This study found that Adler’s ideas not only fit the objectives of whole book reading, but also reflect the concept of core literacy in language subjects and help to achieve the desired effect of whole book reading.Although the whole book teaching has been developed to a certain extent, there are still some problems when it comes to the specific teaching level. In this research, student questionnaires, teacher questionnaires and teacher interviews were used to identify the problems of whole book reading in high school. From the students’ perspective: insufficient awareness of the importance of whole book reading and lack of intrinsic motivation;insufficient reading time and poor interest in reading;no whole book approach to reading and inability to understand in depth;concentration on the type of books read and superficiality in reading. From the teacher’s point of view: insufficient awareness of the importance of teaching whole book reading;unclear understanding of teaching objectives and a tendency towards utilitarianism;classrooms dominated by lectures, depriving students of their autonomy. This study combines Adler’s reading ideas with the reality of whole-book reading teaching in high school, and proposes strategies to change the current problems in whole-book reading teaching: establishing correct principles of whole-book reading teaching;formulating precise whole-book reading teaching objectives;and using scientific and reasonable whole-book reading teaching methods.
