As an important part of Chinese teaching, reading teaching is the key to embody the humanity of Chinese subject, and it is also the focus of Chinese education research from beginning to end.Since the "2017 edition of the Chinese Curriculum Standards for Ordinary High Schools" placed the "whole book reading and discussion" learning task group at the top of the 18 learning task groups, research on Chinese reading teaching, especially on whole book reading teaching, has emerged in the education industry.Narratology,as an emerging science introduced to China at the end of the 20 th century, has been widely used in novel interpretation due to its emphasis on the artistic form and expressive techniques of works. However, its research mainly focuses on the analysis of individual reading, and its integration with the whole book reading of novels is rare.Based on the exploration of hot topics in the teaching of whole book reading and the lack of narrative theory in the application of whole book reading, this paper attempts to combine narrative theory with the teaching of whole book reading in novels, exploring the application of narrative theory in the teaching of whole book reading in novels from three aspects: narrator, narrative perspective, and narrative time, and providing new ideas for the teaching of whole book reading. This paper will be divided into four parts for discussion. The first part elaborates on the origin, significance, and current research situation of the topic, laying a foundation for the writing of this paper. The second part provides a relevant overview of the core parts of narratology theory and whole book reading teaching theory, and clarifies the significance of applying narratology in whole book reading teaching of novels. The third part investigates and analyzes the current situation of the application of narrative theory in the teaching of whole book reading, and briefly explains the existing problems. The fourth part discusses the implementation of whole book reading teaching in high school novels from the perspective of narratology theory, proposes corresponding application strategies for the whole book reading teaching process, explores the method path of combining narratology with whole book reading teaching, and takes Shen Congwen’s "Border Town" as an example to design the whole book reading teaching under narratology theory. This paper uses literature research, questionnaire survey, and case analysis methods to explore the significance of constructing a narrative perspective in the2017 edition of the Chinese language curriculum standards and the partial edition of textbooks.Based on narrative theory, specific teaching implementation strategies are proposed, attempting to provide some reference for frontline Chinese language teachers and provide valuable insights for future teaching of whole book reading of high school novels,Help students appreciate novel works from multiple perspectives and levels, and gain a richer aesthetic experience.
