One of the featured sections in the 2017 edition and revised 2020 edition of the "National Curriculum Standards for High School Biology" is the condensation of subject core competencies,which has become a focus of education.The "Problem Discussion" column is located at the beginning of each section of the textbook and presents diverse,advanced,and inspiring content.Its importance is self-evident.In this study,the author selects the "Problem Discussion" column and its content expansion as the research direction and explores the cultivation of students’ core competencies through actual teaching.In the experimental study,the author randomly selected two classes of similar levels as the experimental and control groups and designed pre-test questions to determine the existing level of core competencies of the students in the experimental and control groups.The results showed no significant difference between the two groups,proving that the experiment could be conducted.Through a preliminary questionnaire survey on the directions and contents of the "Problem Discussion" column that students are interested in,the author devised expansion content and conducted experimental practical teaching activities in the experimental and control groups according to the plan in the first-line teaching.After the completion of the compulsory "Molecular and Cellular Biology" content,the final exam was used as the post-test data for both groups.The data of both groups were analyzed,organized,and compared to draw conclusions.At the same time,a post-survey questionnaire was used to determine the teacher’s completion status during the experimental practical teaching process and the changes that occurred to the students.This aims to assist in improving the later evaluation system of core competencies and turning the nondetectable development of students’ core competencies into visualized data.The author also conducted case analysis of some classroom records to indirectly show the changes in students’ thinking,abilities,attitudes,and emotions,and to assist in improving the evaluation of core competencies,an unobservable evaluation index.In this study,the expansion of the "Problem Discussion" column and its content is conducive to enhancing students’ exploration of science and improving their ability to integrate and apply knowledge,creating a good learning atmosphere,and enhancing students’ sense of learning subjectivity,thereby enhancing the cultivation of students’ life concept,scientific thinking,scientific exploration,and social responsibility.It is also conducive to enhancing the professional ethics and competence of teachers,inspiring teachers to provide equal teaching,and enhancing teachers’ ability to cultivate students’ core competencies and quality skills.At the same time,the expansion of the "Problem Discussion" column and its content also hopes to provide some help to front-line teachers in using the "Problem Discussion" column.
