Intergroup relationship mainly refers to the social psychological relationship between an individual’s group and other groups.Under the influence of group identity, people generally prefer their own group and have certain prejudice and discrimination against other group members.Synchronous motion refers to the time alignment of two or more interacting individuals moving in the same space according to music or beat.At present, the research on the intergroup relationship between synchronous movement mainly focuses on the fact that synchronous movement can reduce intergroup prejudice and promote social contact with out-group.Because there are different relative positions between groups in synchronous movement, different relative positions produce different degrees of non-verbal communication behaviors(such as eye contact and smile). In addition,in synchronous movement, there may be competition between groups. However,no studies have examined how the relative position and competition of two groups in synchronous movement affect the positive social effects of synchronous movement on intergroup relations. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of relative position and competition on intergroup relations in synchronous motion. In experiment 1,different relative positions of two groups(face to face, front to back, side to side)in synchronous movement were investigated. The results showed that:(1)Compared with out-group members, once participants were grouped, they had higher intimate connections with in-group members;(2)compared with the asynchronous exercise, the participants in the synchronous exercise showed a higher level of intimate contact with the out-group members, while the intimate contact with the in-group members was not affected by the exercise condition;(3)In the synchronous movement of different positions, the participants’ intimate contact with the members of the group was not affected by the relative position, but the intimate contact with the members of the external group was affected by the relative position, that is,the face-to-face position of the participants was significantly more intimate contact with the members of the external group than the front row and side by side;(4)In the front and back positions, the participants in the back row had a significantly higher intimate connection with the members of the former exclusion group than the participants in the front row had a significantly higher intimate connection with the members of the post-exclusion group. On the basis of Experiment 1,experiment 2 investigated the effect of relative position and competition between groups on intergroup relations in synchronous motion. The results showed that:(1)in the face to face position, synchronous movement enhanced the intimate relationship between individuals and out-group members regardless of whether there was competition between groups.(2)In the side-by-side position, competition destroys the promotion effect of synchronous movement on intergroup intimacy. Conclusion: When participants were grouped, they had higher levels of bonding with in-group members;Compared with asynchronous movement, synchronous movement can significantly improve inter-group relations and promote close contact with out-group members, and the improvement effect is best in face-to-face position. In the front-row synchronous movement, the participants in the back row perceived the close connection with the former exclusionist group members significantly higher than the participants in the front row perceived the close connection with the former exclusionist group members.Face to face synchronous movement can resist the damage of inter-group relations caused by competition to a certain extent, but side by side position can not resist.Based on the above research results, the following educational implications are proposed:(1)reasonably adjust the relative position of synchronous activities to promote good interpersonal relationship;(2)Pay attention to the promotion effect of nonverbal communication on interpersonal relationship;(3)Use synchronous movement to resist competition and prevent competition from destroying interpersonal relationship.
