The "main question" teaching method is a teaching method proposed by Mr.Yu Yingchao to solve the phenomenon of broken questions, shallow questions and ineffective questions in language reading teaching. The so-called "main questions" are questions that are formulated by the teacher after a deep study of the textbook and are based on the learning situation, and are small in quantity but precise in quality, guiding students to think in depth. The GCSE Language Curriculum sets out clear requirements for the development of students’ literary appreciation skills in the areas of language tasting and emotional experience. The "main question" teaching method is in line with the requirements of the curriculum standards of taking students as the main body and cultivating students’ core language literacy, using questions to promote thinking, effectively integrating the content of the text, focusing on the key points of the curriculum and improving teaching efficiency. This paper is divided into six parts, with the application of the "main question" teaching method in the teaching of high school novels as the object of study. The first part is the introduction, which introduces the reason for choosing the topic, the literature review, the significance of the research and the research methodology. The first chapter provides a theoretical overview, attempting to define the core concepts of "main problem" and "secondary problems",and expounding the theoretical basis of the "main problem" teaching method. The second chapter analyses the practical value of the "main question" teaching method in the teaching of novels in the context of the novels in the Ministry of Education’s textbooks. The third chapter uses a questionnaire survey to understand the current situation of the teaching of "main questions" in high school novels,to sort out the four problems that exist in the teaching of "main question",and to analyse the causes of the problems from multiple perspectives.Chapter 4 presents the principles and strategies for optimising the design of the "main question" in view of the practical problems and difficulties in teaching the "main question".Finally,in Chapter 5,three texts from the Ministry of Education’s textbook are selected and designed to reflect the teaching concept of "main questions".The purpose of this paper is to enhance other researchers’ rational understanding of the "main question" teaching method, and to provide some reference for front-line teachers in designing "main question" in the teaching of high school novels.
