Student participation in class directly affects their learning outcomes. However, many teachers understand classroom participation only as verbal activities, which,in the current context of large-scale classroom teaching and fast-paced instruction, leads teachers to instinctively favor students who can quickly respond positively to teaching behavior, while ignoring the classroom participation of silent students. To explore the patterns of classroom participation of silent students, this study focuses on the primary education stage and uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and track data on the current status and classroom participation of silent students in primary schools.First, the study used a questionnaire survey to understand the current status of silent students in primary schools. The survey found that the distribution of the degree of silence among primary school silent students presented an olive-shaped structure with narrow ends and a wide middle, with a large proportion of medium and high level silent students. Therefore, silent students in primary schools need our attention.Data analysis showed that the phenomenon of silent students was mainly influenced by grade level and student source, with no significant correlation with gender.Among the three types of silence tendencies in primary school silent students, the altruistic conservative tendency was the lowest, and the self-conservative tendency was the highest.Second, based on the tracking observation results, this study selected eight silent students as observation objects and divided them into deep learners and shallow learners according to their learning styles. After a period of qualitative observation and interviews, the characteristics of classroom participation of these two types of silent students were mainly reflected in five aspects: facial expressions, action responses, language output, interactive tendencies, and learning outcomes. In addition, factors influencing the classroom participation of silent students in primary schools were analyzed, including learning motivation, teacher factors, peer relationships, and classroom environment. Finally, based on the characteristics and influencing factors of classroom participation of silent students, this study summarized strategies and suggestions for promoting the classroom participation of silent students in primary schools:(1)reunderstand silent students;(2)teach to the whole;(3)cultivate a learning community;and(4)create an active learning environment.
