In the Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards(2022 Edition),the core literacies to be developed in the mathematics curriculum include the "three skills",among which the key literacy of being able to observe the real world through the eyes of mathematics is symbolic awareness in compulsory education.This study focuses on the core literacy of symbolic awareness to provide practical strategies for students’ learning and teachers’ teaching.This paper is based on theoretical basis,through literature research method,interview method,questionnaire survey method,and classroom observation method.This study is divided into the following parts:In the first part,a theoretical overview of mathematical symbols,developing symbolic awareness and mathematics teaching strategies was conducted through a knowledge-based literature review on the theoretical basis of cognitivist theory,constructivist theory,symbolic mediation theory,tool creation theory,and nearest developmental zone theory to provide a theoretical basis for the study of teaching strategies for developing symbolic awareness.In the second part,the current situation of students’ symbolic consciousness development is investigated through test papers,and the main problems in students’ symbolic consciousness development are the lack of deep understanding of symbols,the lack of proficiency in the use of symbols,the lack of symbolic transfer ability,and the difficulty in using symbols to solve practical problems.The current situation of teachers’ symbolic awareness teaching in different age groups was understood through the interview method and questionnaires,which were that teachers’ theoretical understanding was not comprehensive,they lacked reference strategies for typical symbolic awareness teaching examples,and it was difficult to combine symbolic awareness teaching with specific contexts.In the third part,through an in-depth study and analysis of symbolic awareness in mathematics,this paper proposes reference teaching strategies,namely,to let symbolic awareness germinate in children’s mind;to let students fully experience the process of symbolic abstraction in teaching;to cultivate students’ symbolic awareness in the process of problem solving;and to use mathematical symbols flexibly to further develop symbolic awareness.Finally,in the concrete teaching practice,the author used the strategies mentioned above for cultivating students’ symbolic consciousness,and also combined some novel teaching methods and means,such as number games and mathematical symbol painting,etc.The effectiveness of the strategies was verified by comparing the mathematics academic level tests of the experimental and control classes.It provides a certain reference and reference value for future teaching practice and research.
