Since 2017,China’s junior high schools have been using the Ministry’s textbook, which has added a new section of "guided reading of masterpieces" and made certain changes in the teaching of reading masterpieces, which has put forward guiding suggestions for the reading and teaching methods of masterpieces. In this regard,it is relevant to conduct research on the teaching of reading masterpieces in the unified textbook. As we all know, the teaching of reading masterpieces has a very important value, through the teaching of reading masterpieces not only helps students to learn literary knowledge, enrich their own cultural heritage, but also in the ideological inculcation of students, help students to establish a correct outlook on life and values. In the Language Curriculum Standards for Full-time Compulsory Education,it is clearly stated that students should cultivate an interest in reading, increase the amount of reading, expand the reading area, and advocate reading more, reading well, reading good books, and reading whole books. However,in the actual middle school language teaching, there are still many problems with the teaching of reading masterpieces, and the current situation of reading masterpieces for middle school students is not optimistic. For this reason,it is necessary to find out the problems in junior high school masterpiece reading education by means of corresponding investigation and analysis,so as to propose effective teaching methods that can effectively solve the problems of junior high school masterpiece reading, improve the efficiency of masterpiece reading teaching, and enhance students’ reading ability. The new curriculum categorizes the three years of junior high school into one school period, and the overall educational goals and requirements formulated at the overall level are relatively general, which cannot effectively guide teachers to teach reading of masterpieces in practice. In contrast,stage-based teaching is a modern teaching method with more characteristics and targeted guidance, which can effectively promote students’ learning outcomes in junior high school masterpiece reading teaching. The main emphasis of stage-based instruction is on differentiated instruction for different levels,i.e.,different grade levels,in an effort to assimilate students in each grade level.Based on this, the current problems of negative attitudes, lack of teaching methods, random reading styles and poor timing in teaching reading of famous books in junior high schools were found by means of a questionnaire survey.Based on the general objectives and requirements of the new curriculum, and taking into account the characteristics of each grade level and the general objectives of reading,we propose a stage-based teaching, dividing the three years of junior high school into three stages according to the grade level: with the first stage focusing on stimulating students’ interest in reading, the second stage focusing on reading to promote speaking and writing, and the third stage focusing on thematic reading instruction, using the corresponding instructional methods in stages. At the same time, the teaching case design of each stage is proposed for the teaching practice of reading masterpieces at each stage and the above instructional methods, and attempts are made to flexibly use various activity programs to implement teaching in classroom teaching practice at each stage. We construct a stage-based teaching evaluation system for junior high school masterpiece reading, and provide feedback and reflections on the teaching effectiveness of each stage starting from the teaching evaluation. The study confirms that stage-based teaching helps junior high school students develop an interest in reading, builds an open teaching classroom, changes teaching methods and learning styles, and provides a broader space for teaching reading of masterpieces. It also enables the teacher’s leading role and the students’ main role to be played effectively, which not only contributes to the improvement of language interest, but also provides students with basic reading skills in other subjects, which has a positive effect on students’ learning.
