Academic procrastination not only affects the academic performance of high school students, but also has a negative impact on physical and mental health,so it is urgent to improve academic procrastination among high school students, and there has been a lack of research on the relationship between future-oriented coping and academic procrastination. In this study,963 high school seniors in a county in Liaoning Province were administered questionnaires(Future Oriented Coping Scale,Aitken Procrastination Scale, and Adolescent Burnout Scale)using a combination of cross-sectional data and intervention studies to investigate the mechanisms of future-oriented coping and academic procrastination. The results of Study 1 showed that(1)analysis of variance based on demographic variables showed that there were no differences in high school students’ future orientation coping, academic procrastination, and academic burnout on the variables of gender(p>0.05),residence(p>0.05),and whether they were single parents(p>0.05);there were differences of varying degrees on the variable of whether they were only children(p<0.01,p< 0.05,p<0.05)(2)The results of correlation analysis showed that future orientation coping was significantly and negatively correlated with both academic burnout and academic procrastination(r=-0.34,p<0.001,r=-0.45,p<0.001);academic burnout was significantly and positively correlated with academic procrastination(r=0.55,p<0.001).The results of Study 2 showed that after the implementation of the future-oriented coping group counseling intervention for the experimental group, there was a significant increase in the level of future-oriented coping(p<0.001)among the experimental group members compared to the control group,as well as a significant decrease in academic procrastination and academic burnout(p<0.001,p<0.05)when compared to the experimental group pretest.Study findings:(1)High school students in general showed moderate to low levels of academic burnout and academic procrastination, and future-oriented coping in general was at moderate to high levels, with no significant correlations with demographic variables such as gender, place of residence, and whether they were single parents;and significant correlations with whether they were only children.(2)The future-oriented coping, academic burnout, and academic procrastination of high school students were significantly correlated.High school students’ academic burnout partially mediated the relationship between future-oriented coping and academic procrastination.(3)The group counseling program for future-oriented coping designed in this study can effectively improve the level of future-oriented coping of high school students and achieve the effect of improving academic burnout and academic procrastination. Two studies focused on the mechanisms by which future-oriented coping influences academic procrastination, and these findings facilitate high school students to better understand how future-oriented coping influences academic procrastination, thus providing a new perspective on interventions for academic procrastination...
