The phenomenon of academ ic procrastination among college students has been concerned by educators and psychologists.Some researchers point out that academic procrastination will prevent them from achieving their goals,linked to poor academic performance and a decline in grade-point average.And it also reduce confidence,cause negative emotion such as self-abasement,anxiety,and depression.Then,it m ay have an impact on the heal th and wellbeing of th e students.Previous studies on academic procrastination are mainly concentrated in measuring tools,influencing factors and correlated variables,very few on interven tion.Some studies have indicated that academ ic procrastination is influenced by personality characteristics,motivation and self-efficacy etc.Other studies have found that the m ore effective the tim e management skills,the less acad emic procrastination will be;the stronger the ability o f self-control,the higher the indepen dent learning ability.Based on previous studies,the group counseling progra m are designed according to group dynamics theory.And the effect of group counseling on academic procrastination are studied fr om two aspects: tim e management and self-control with the m ethod of cogni tive-behavioral group intervention.A total 15 volunteer students from a university in Hangzhou were divided into Group A(8 students)and Group B(7 students).Control group are 15 students who were randomly selected.Group A and Group B participated in the five-week group counseling activit ies separately,and control group did no t receive any in tervention.The Academic Procrastination Scale-Student Form developed by Milgram(1998)and adapted by Han Guining(2008),Adolescence Time Management Disposition Scale developed by Hu ang Xiting(2001),and Self-contro l Scale for college students developed by Chen Heping(2009)ar e regarded are as evaluation tool s for test before and after the intervention,and for test after a month of the intervention.In addition,the Group A and B were required to fill in the Group C ounseling Assessment Form after the intervention.According to the results of comparison between experimental group and control group and intra-group comparison in experimental group,the m ain conclusion are as fo llows:(1)The group counseling is an ef fective way to im prove college students’ academic procrastination.(2)The group coun seling has an obvious effect on the improvem ent of time management skills and self-contro l,especially on the sense of time control and self-assessm ent.(3)College students’ academic procrastination can be improved by enhancing tim e management skills and self-control.(4)Th e group counseling has a continuous influences on im proving college students’ academic procrastination,time management skills and self-control.
