The phenomenon of left-behind children is a result of the unbalanced economic development in Chinese society, where parents go out to work and live apart from their children.Without the company and proper education of their parents,left-behind children may become emotionally indifferent, poor learners, addicted to the Internet or even go astray.Based on the harmonious development of societies and the need for healthy growth of young people,China has been paying more attention to the problem of left-behind children in rural areas, and has conducted a lot of research. However, the hidden problem of being left behind in urban families due to psychological segregation has not been widely recognised and paid attention to.As the internet continues to participate in people’s lives, the better living conditions of urban adolescents and their easy access to electronic devices have led to a growing phenomenon of internet addiction.Interviews and observations of adolescents and families suggest that there is an interactive relationship between adolescent internet dependency and the phenomenon of invisible left-behind.Social work plays a mediating and assisting role in both the family and adolescent domains, and social workers are able to apply their professional knowledge and skills to help ease the parent-child relationship and solve problems in families with internet addiction and hidden retention problems.Relying on family systems theory, the study uses unstructured interview method and participant observation method to understand the current situation of adolescents’ Internet dependence and invisible stay-behind in L street of G city and their parents,to explore the interaction, and to conduct group social work to reconcile the parent-child relationship of these invisible stay-behind families and alleviate the adolescents’ Internet addiction. The results show that,on the one hand, adolescent internet dependence triggers both behavioural and psychological retention in the family. The excessive use of the Internet by adolescents reduces the time spent between parents and children, resulting in less communication, less physical contact and less parent-child activities, which together constitute behavioural retention;adolescents’ addiction to the Internet can cause alienation and intensify conflicts in parent-child relationships, leading to psychological retention. The invisible left-behind is a combination of behavioural left-behind and psychological left-behind.On the other hand, invisible retention can deepen young people’s addiction and dependence on the Internet.Dissonance with family members puts young people in a lonely and helpless situation, and they can only turn to the Internet for pleasure and satisfaction, and the easy availability and addictive nature of electronic devices make young people quickly fall into the abyss of the virtual world of the Internet.Based on the investigation of the current situation of internet dependency and invisibility, the author conducted group social work with the families of the interviewees,in order to ease the parent-child relationship in some of the families through professional social work interventions, and to improve the over-dependence behaviour of the youths on the internet and develop a good lifestyle. This social work intervention will serve as a reference for the community to improve the current situation of internet dependency in invisible families. |
