Researchers have seen that parental involvement has a positive effect on their children’s education. But unfortunately, some parents are not taking part in their children’s school activities. This study was conducted to discover the reasons behind this lack of parental involvement in six primary schools located in Namibia’s Omusati region. It aims to answer the question: What family and school factors keep parents from actively participating in their children’s education? To answer these questions,a qualitative case study was used. This study’s sample consisted of six primary schools in Namibia’s Omusati region. At each of the six schools,I worked with six principals, four department heads/senior teachers, three teachers, three parents who serve as school board chairs, and three students from three of the six schools(25 participants in total).A questionnaire was used to collect data, which was then analyzed qualitatively. The data was examined by thematic analysis. The study revealed various hindrances to parents’ involvement in their children’s education, including family unprivileged socioeconomic backgrounds, family illiteracy, passive teacher attitudes, and weak school-parent communication.Consequently, several suggestions are put forth such as launching a campaign to create awareness of the value of learning and to encourage parents to play their part in education;furthermore, considering introducing a module in higher educational institutes on how to involve parents in education.
