The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is the second Olympic Games hosted by China after the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and the first Winter Olympics hosted by China. It represents the expectation of 1.4 billion Chinese people to work together with people from all over the world, help each other and create a better future.Although the world has high hopes for the success of the Beijing Winter Olympics,a few Western countries, led by the United States, have adopted the tactic of “diplomatic boycott” to try to tarnish China’s international image. Therefore, how Sino-US media convey the content and meaning of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics through their reporting and constructed news frames will have an undeniable impact on China’s international image.Based on the frame theory, this paper selects two mainstream media outlets from Sino-US – People’s Daily and The New York Times – as research objects and uses content analysis to explore the basic structure of their Winter Olympics reporting from five aspects: reporting time and quantity, length, genre, perspective, and tone.On this basis, combined with Zang Guoren’s “three-level structure of frames” theory and news discourse analysis theory, this paper analyzes the Winter Olympics reporting frames of the two newspapers from three levels of high, middle, and low structures and compares the similarities and differences in their reporting frames. The paper aims to provide some suggestions and countermeasures for People’s Daily to prioritize its discourse power in international communication. The study found that People’s Daily constructed a “distinctive,three-dimensional,authoritative” Winter Olympics reporting frame starting from the perspective of national interests. In contrast,The New York Times constructed a “biased, nonobjective, negative” Winter Olympics reporting frame through hidden intentions and deliberate blackening. The Western media, represented by The New York Times, generally and significantly adopts this kind of broken news frame when reporting on China issues. As a mainstream media outlet in China,People’s Daily can adopt strategies such as facing controversial and sensitive issues, weakening the propaganda of its reporting, and expanding its discourse communication methods to break the dominant position of Western media in the international public opinion arena, thereby enhancing the international discourse power and influence of Chinese media.
