The population is an essential promoter of economic and social development and the basis and subject of all social production behaviors.According to the physiological and social characteristics of the population, the population structure is generally divided into three categories: natural population structure, population social structure, and regional population structure.Among them, the natural form of the population is divided into population age structure and population sex structure.China’s population birth rate and natural growth rate is declining, which makes China’s aging continue to deepen, especially in rural areas. At the same time, there is still an imbalance between men and women in China, which will have a certain degree of impact on China’s economic and social development. As an important driving force for China’s economic growth, the tourism industry will also be seriously impacted. Therefore,it is of particular significance to fully consider the age structure and gender structure of the population in the study of tourism consumption of urban and rural residents in China.Firstly, this paper combs, expounds, and summarizes the relevant research at home and abroad and introduces the relevant theoretical knowledge from the aspects of population structure, consumption, and demand, including the population structure concept,Keynes consumption theory, life cycle theory, and so on.At the same time,by collecting relevant information and data, the natural structure of the domestic population and the current situation of domestic tourism consumption is analyzed and combined with the urban and rural population structure. The characteristics and influencing factors of residents ’ tourism consumption are analyzed respectively.Secondly,by constructing the VECM model, this paper empirically investigates the residents ’ tourism consumption data from 1994 to 2020 in China. It integrates the natural structure of the population to explore the dynamic influence of the natural form of the people on the residents ’ tourism consumption. Then, using the provincial panel data of the whole country, urban and rural areas from 2010 to 2020.a fixed effect model is established to analyze the impact of the age structure and gender structure of the national, urban, and rural population on residents ’tourism consumption, the impact differences, and robustness analysis. Finally, the research conclusions are expounded, and the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions are put forward.Through research, this paper draws the following conclusions. From the national level,(1)there is a long-term equilibrium relationship between the natural structure of China’s population and residents ’ tourism consumption;(2)The aggravation of the elderly dependency ratio will have a positive impact on tourism consumption to a certain extent.(3)The increase in population sex ratio positively impacts tourism consumption. From the perspective of urban and rural areas, the impact of the natural structure of urban and rural populations on residents ’ tourism consumption is different.(1)Compared with rural areas, the change in children ’s dependency ratio has a more substantial impact on urban residents’ tourism consumption;(2)The change in the old-age dependency ratio only has a significant positive impact on urban tourism consumption.(3)The gender structure of the population has a substantial impact on rural tourism consumption but has little impact on urban tourism consumption.
