This paper studies the effect of parental retirement together with the abolishment of the one-child policy on adult children’s fertility through intergenerational time transfer.Adopting a fuzzy regression discontinuity design,we find that the effect of mothers’ retirement on the fertility of adult children depends on the implementation of the two-child policy. While mothers’ retirement increases adult children’s extensive fertility margin(giving childbirth or not)when faced the one-child restriction. It is the interaction between mothers’ retirement and abolishment of the one-child limit that has a positive effect on adult children’s fertility along the intensive margin(having additional children among those who already have children). We also find evidence suggesting that the intergenerational time transfer from parents to children may play an important role in driving the observed effect.
