Since the promulgation of the GCSE Language Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition),core language literacy has gradually received widespread attention from academics and the GCSE language curriculum has undergone significant changes.Increasing emphasis has been placed on teaching and learning to cultivate students’ core literacy at the four levels of language,thinking,aesthetics and culture as well as the sense of cooperation,spirit of inquiry and creative ability presented in the learning process.Ancient poetry is an important part of the excellent traditional Chinese culture and contains the unique way of thinking,aesthetic interest and emotional tendencies of the Chinese people.It is a valuable crystallisation of Chinese culture,especially the ancient poems selected for inclusion in the Ministry’s version of the senior secondary language textbooks,which are both beautiful and inspiring through the ages.Therefore,to infuse the concept of language core literacy into the teaching of ancient poetry and to explore strategies for teaching ancient poetry is not only a requirement of the current development of the times,but also a call and a return to the excellent Chinese traditional culture.However,in the context of the New Curriculum Reform,the gap between ancient and modern times and the fact that most teachers still use traditional ideas and methods to teach ancient poetry have gradually led to the following problems:the teaching of ancient poetry has become more and more complex.The teaching of ancient poetry gradually presents problems such as narrow educational objectives and a disregard for the aesthetic culture of poetry;poor analysis of the imagery of ancient poetry,which makes it difficult to develop thinking space;insufficient motivation of students to learn;and a single type of homework and a patterned teaching process.To develop students’ core language literacy in the teaching of ancient poetry,teachers need to first clarify the basic concept of core language literacy and change their teaching methods.Pay attention to the linguistic forms of ancient poetry,and enhance core language literacy in various types of language practice activities such as recitation,rewriting and comparative text analysis;focus on the creation of ancient poetry learning contexts,combine popular culture with local culture,and guide students to have fun learning ancient poetry in a rich variety of activities that bridge the gap between the times.In addition,teaching assessment is also an important part of teachers’ teaching.Teachers should pay attention to students’ accumulation of ancient poetry,restructure the ancient poetry assessment section,focus on students’ daily learning process,and optimise the design of ancient poetry assignments to further enhance their ability to use ancient poetry and language.
