Education is a powerful tool to achieve upward mobility, and as an important indicator of children’s future education, academic performance is not only the focus of families, but also an important issue of social equity. In children’s education, the Internet is a “double-edged sword”,which is not only an important platform for children to acquire new knowledge, creativity and imagination, but also a negative space for children to receive negative information, indulge in entertainment, and lose their minds with playthings. At present, there are few studies on the impact of children’s Internet use on academic performance, and this study uses structural equation model analysis method to empirically study the pathway mechanism of children’s Internet use affecting academic performance based on the data of the 2018 China Household Tracking Survey.Conduct an in-depth look at the gender,rural-urban and class differences that affect children’s internet use in academic performance.Firstly, the analysis of the current situation of children’s Internet use and academic performance in China shows that: 1.The proportion of each frequency of children’s online learning shows a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, while the proportion of each frequency of online social networking and online entertainment increases with the increase of frequency, and there are significant gender, urban and rural and class differences in the frequency of children’s online learning, social interaction and entertainment.2.Children’s class ranking, the proportion of each part of the grade ranking, words, and mathematics test scores all have the characteristics of "low at both ends and high in the middle",and there are significant group differences in these four variables.3.Through regression analysis,it is preliminarily concluded that the frequency of online learning significantly positively affects parent-child relationship, learning behavior and academic performance, while online social behavior significantly negatively affects parent-child relationship, and online entertainment behavior significantly negatively affects learning behavior.Secondly, the pathway mechanism of children’s Internet use on academic performance is analyzed: 1.Children’s Internet use has a significant positive impact on academic performance.2.Children’s Internet use negatively affects parent-child relationships and inhibits academic performance.3.Children’s Internet use can cause negative learning behavior, which in turn negatively affects academic performance. The results of path analysis show that children’s Internet use has a strong positive impact on academic performance, and parent-child relationship and learning behavior play a partial inhibitory role in children’s Internet use affecting academic performance.Thirdly, the group differences in the impact of children’s Internet use on academic performance are found that: 1.Compared with girls, the increase of boys’ Internet frequency is more beneficial to improve the possibility of their academic performance, but it is not conducive to improving the possibility of improving the quality of parent-child relationship.2.Compared with rural children, the more frequently urban children go online, the less likely they are to improve their parent-child relationship.3.The increase in the frequency of children in low-class families is more conducive to improving the possibility of learning behavior, and the higher the frequency of children in high-level families, the more unfavorable it is to the possibility of improving parentchild relationship. Finally, based on the research results,we propose countermeasures from the family, school, and national levels, and look forward to future research.
