According to statistics, about 15000 children with childhood leukemia are added every year in China, and the incidence rate of childhood leukemia is growing at an annual rate of 2.8%.Leukemia has a long treatment cycle and requires repeated hospitalization for closed treatment.During the treatment process, the child suffers from pain and suffering.Faced with confusion, fear, and the side effects of chemotherapy, children with leukemia can exhibit various negative emotions such as anxiety, silence, and depression.Over time, this can lead to physical and psychological abnormalities in children with leukemia,as well as impact on their future lives. Therefore, the development of children with leukemia has always been a key topic of social concern. As a vulnerable group, children with leukemia are at a stage of cognitive development, and it is often easy to ignore their emotional problems during the treatment process. It is very important to cultivate and enhance the emotional management ability of children with leukemia.Studying this topic has positive significance for the psychological health development of children with leukemia and improving their quality of life. This study is an in-depth study of emotional management in children with leukemia in order to enable them to learn emotional management and alleviate the pressure of hospitalization. This article takes leukemia children from the pediatric ward of X Hospital in Changsha as the research object. The main methods used include literature review, interview, and questionnaire.Based on existing academic research,a group work was conducted to evaluate the emotional management ability of leukemia children in the pediatric ward of X Hospital. It is believed that leukemia children have strong needs for emotional management, social support, and mental health.Research has found that the negative emotions of children with leukemia mainly come from a series of factors such as insufficient understanding of their own condition, painful treatment process, lack of care from all sectors of society, stable economic security of families, and disharmonious relationships among family members. Moreover, the accumulated negative emotions over the long term cannot be resolved in a timely manner, resulting in deeper emotional problems.Children with leukemia, due to their young age and insufficient emotional management abilities, are unable to regulate their emotions when facing problems, leading to worsening of negative emotions.Secondly, the lack of medical staff, the low level of professional service, and the lack of targeted case services are also issues that need to be addressed when medical social workers intervene. On the basis of needs assessment and problem analysis, social workers weighed service strategies and intervened in emotional management of leukemia patients in the form of group work.Firstly, the author will conduct a preliminary assessment of children with leukemia.Under the condition that the children adapt to their own conditions and are willing, six children were selected to carry out emotional management group work.We hope that the children can fully release their emotions in the group and help them regain confidence in life.A total of six group activities were designed to address the issues and needs of group members. This group will use social support theory and Piaget’s theory of cognitive development in children, combined with professional methods of social work,to provide assistance to children with leukemia based on their service needs. In the early stages of group activities, establish relationships between team members, trust between team members and social workers, and provide them with a preliminary understanding of emotions. In the middle of group activities, ask team members to identify positive and negative emotions and how to manage emotions effectively. In the later stage of group activities, let team members release their negative emotions reasonably and learn how to deal with them.In group activities, social workers utilize external resource links to build a stable internal support network for team members, and with the assistance of social workers, team members can successfully achieve group goals.Compared to before the group activity, the overall emotional management ability of the group members has been enhanced, enabling them to correctly face emotional issues during the treatment stage, and the quality of life has also been improved. The activity evaluation also found that there are still some issues with group activities, such as the lack of universality of the research subjects, limited venue for group activities, and the impact of physical discomfort on group attendance. For these issues, the author suggests advocating for parents to accompany children in group activities, establishing professional group workplaces, and providing separate ward activities for group members who are unable to participate in a certain group session. The author hopes to learn from the experience of this group,in order to improve the future situation of the group, and to explore a more comprehensive way to help children with leukemia effectively solve their emotional needs and enhance their emotional management ability.
