The language curriculum is dedicated to developing students’ ability to use language and writing and laying the foundation for learning other subjects;reading can help exercise children’s emotional and intellectual intelligence and develop high moral qualities.Teaching reading is a very beneficial way to teach language. The new standards for reading advocate that students develop good reading habits and read independently, while students in higher levels are required to appreciate the author’s thoughts and feelings and to understand the way the text is explained. This study is based on the existing literature analysis of reading teaching in upper elementary schools. It is found that the current reading teaching has less research on teaching objectives before class, not enough attention is paid to reading strategies in the classroom, and there is a shortage of application of Bloom’s new taxonomy of educational objectives in reading teaching.Students and teachers in 18 classes of grade4 and 5 in S elementary school in H city were taken as the key observation subjects.8classes of students in grades 4 and 5 were selected for the student questionnaire,and342 valid questionnaires were collected.9 teachers were selected for the interview, mainly to understand the students’ pre-reading,classroom interaction and post-course assignment,so as to start the analysis. At the same time, four teaching cases were selected,in which Bloom’s new taxonomy of educational objectives was applied to study the cases.A survey of students’ and teachers’ current situation revealed four problems encountered in reading teaching in upper elementary school: students’ incomplete pre-reading work, students’ bias in reading comprehension, single way of classroom interaction, and teaching objectives designed to be inconsistent with the teaching process. The main reasons for this are students’ lack of interest in reading and correct methods;teachers’ neglect of learning;imperfect teaching objectives, contents, and methods as well as teachers’ lack of virtuous thinking and mentality.Through the case study of applying Bloom’s New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives to the classroom,we found that Bloom’s New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives can help teachers break down and refine teaching objectives and clarify teaching priorities, which helps promote students’ in-depth reading and cultivate high-level thinking, thus promoting better operation of reading teaching in upper elementary schools. In conclusion, applying Bloom’s New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives to the study of reading teaching in upper elementary schools has certain guiding significance and helps teachers to master the teaching objectives more accurately and completely.
