Since the reform and opening up,economic construction has always been the theme of China’s development,and very remarkable achievements have been made.For a long time,higher-level officials focused too much on economic indicators in their evaluations of subordinates.According to the research consensus of scholars,the distortion of statistical data will not only affect the central government’s judgment on the economic development of the area where the data is falsified,so that the problems existing in the local development process cannot be solved in time,but also reduce the scale of the central government’s transfer payment to the region,and to a certain extent,reduce the available financial resources and people’s livelihood security capacity of the city and county governments.After consolidating the statistical data,although some fiscal and economic indicators will fluctuate significantly in the short term,the improvement of the authenticity of statistical data is a positive signal for the future development of the region and will be conducive to achieving long-term stable development.Therefore,unlike the previous qualitative analysis of the causes,hazards and governance of data distortion,this paper empirically tests the net effect of the impact of consolidating statistical data on the survival of enterprises at the city level by using the panel data of 274 prefecture-level cities in China from 2010 to 2019 from the perspective of enterprise survival,and taking the event of consolidating statistical data in Liaoning Province in 2015 as a quasi-natural experiment.The conduction path that produces this effect was tested by mechanism analysis,and finally heterogeneity analysis and robustness test were performed.The results show that:(1)after consolidating the statistical data,the survival rate of enterprises in the city is significantly improved;(2)After the authenticity of statistical data is improved,the tax expenditure of enterprises is significantly reduced,and the sustainable operation ability of enterprises is improved through the path of reducing tax pressure;(3)Through the heterogeneity analysis from the perspectives of cities and industries,the improvement of statistical data authenticity has a greater impact on the viability of enterprises in cities with relatively high level of innovation,openness and market demand,and has a more significant impact on cities with relatively few large and medium-sized enterprises and most service industries.As an important force driving economic development,enterprises can only play a better role under the premise of ensuring survival.Through the discussion of the above issues,not only the empirical research on the subsequent development of regional regions can be supplemented by the improvement of statistical data authenticity,but also the mechanism affecting the survival of enterprises can be specifically identified,so as to put forward targeted policy suggestions.The possible innovation of this paper is that most of the existing research on firm survival starts from the perspective of the firm and measures the impact of the firm’s own factors on survival,while this paper examines the impact on the survival of the firm when the economic environment factor with the effect of statistical data,which is a signal,changes at the city level.At the same time,there are still a few shortages in the research of this paper,and the data from 2010 to 2019 are retained for 10 years when collecting data for empirical testing,and some indicators do not meet this condition,which may affect the veracity and completeness of estimation results,and these shortcomings still need to be further studied.
