In the wake of the rapid development of economy in recent years, education has also made great progress, the education of extracurricular learning is rising as well.In order to cope with the increasingly competitive social environment and do not let children lose at the “starting line”,a lot of parents begin to pay more attention to the investment of children’s education. However, due to the rapid acceleration of urbanization, the proportion of dual-earner families is increasing, making it difficult for young parents to cope with the pressure from both work and childcare. In this context,in families where grandparents live together, many grandparents may share part of raising their grandchildren.Firstly, this paper reviews the literature on students’ participation in extracurricular learning and the elderly living arrangements, and combines the real-life background with family capital theory, social support theory and human capital theory to propose the research questions of this paper: the influence of grandparents’ co-living arrangement on grandchildren’s participation in extracurricular learning.Using the data of China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),this paper chooses whether grandparents living at home of the same family number as explained variable through the grandchildren personal number one by one,and match their parents and grandparents’ personal information. Then, chooses whether to attend the extracurricular class, the number, time and cost of participating in extracurricular class as explanatory variables.Using OLS and 2SLS two kinds of research methods and applying the individual fixed effect and the time fixed effect, this paper analyzes the influence of grandparents’ co-residence arrangement on the probability, quantity, duration and cost of grandchildren’s participation in extracurricular classes.Whether in urban or rural areas, the empirical results of this paper show that co-residence with grandparents significantly reduce the length of time for grandchildren to participate in the tutorial class, which proves that co-residence with grandparents has a substitution effect on grandchildren’s tutorial class. For the impact of whether to participate in the tutorial class, there is a negative relationship between co-residence with grandparents and grandchildren’s participation in tutorial class in urban areas, and the negative correlation coefficient is greater in rural areas. As for the influence of the number of grandchildren’s participation in tutorial classes, the 2SLS regression results show that the number of grandchildren’s participation in tutorial classes is also negatively correlated with the co-residence with grandparents. In terms of the cost of grandchildren’s participation in the tutorial class, the overall regression shows that there is a positive correlation between the co-residence with grandparents and the cost of grandchildren’s participation in the tutorial class. However,in urban and rural areas, the impact of co-residence with grandparents is not clear, showing a positive correlation in urban areas and a negative correlation in rural areas, and the direction of the impact in urban and rural areas is inconsistent.
