The Effect Of Visual Attention Span On Language Achievement In Mongolian-Chinese Bilingual Children

Abstract/Summary:
Background: The research on the cognitive ability of bilingual children has been a research topic,while visual attention span,as the cognitive ability of reading,has been rarely studied in bilingual children.Most of the previous studies on visual attention span ability focused on dyslexia groups in letter language,with few studies on normal Mongolian and Chinese bilingual children,and little attention to the characteristics of visual attention span ability in the vertical direction.Therefore,this study focuses on the visual attention span of bilingual children,compared the influencing factors of bilingual children in Mongolian and Chinese scores,including visual attention span,verbal working memory and rapid naming of reading-related cognitive ability and family social and economic status,and further explore the relationship between the influencing factors.In this study,194 Mongolian-Chinese bilingual children were recruited from the fourth,fifth and sixth grades of a Mongolian primary school in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region,including 82 boys,112girls,the mean age was 11.11 years old.Their visual attention span ability,verbal working memory,rapid and automatic naming were evaluated,and children’s Mongolian and Chinese scores,and family socioeconomic status were collected.The study results show that:(1)The visual attention span is influenced by language characteristics,In addition to the Mongolian visual attention breadth,Other visual attention breadth is better than horizontally than vertically;(2)Mongolian visual attention span mediated the influence of phonetic visual attention span on Chinese performance;(3)Different factors affecting the performance of Mongolian and Chinese in Mongolian and Chinese bilingual children,verbal and mongolian visual attention span is the most important for the Chinese language performance,only mongolian visual attention span is important for Mongolian language performance;(4)The family social and economic status is significantly and positively correlated with the Chinese language performance of Mongolian and Chinese bilingual children,And the verbal visual attention span mediated the influence of family social and economic status on Chinese performance.The conclusions are as follows:(1)Verbal visual attention span and non-verbal visual attention span are better than vertical,but there is no difference in Mongolian visual attention span;(2)Mongolian visual attention span and verbal visual attention span are important cognitive factors affecting Chinese performance of Mongolian and Chinese bilingual children;(3)Family socioeconomic status only affects the Chinese language achievement of Mongolian and Chinese bilingual children,but does not affect the Mongolian language achievement.
