Case Social Work Intervention In Alleviating Depression Mood Of The Elderly Who Have Lost Their Only Child

In 1982,Family Planning Policy was established as the basic state policy of China.Nearly 40 years of policy implementation,China’s population growth rate has effectively decreased and the population structure has changed.In 2000,the results of the fifth population census showed that China began to enter an aging society.At the same time,China strictly implemented the one-child policy in cities,resulting in the emergence of a large number of one-child families.With the occurrence of various uncertain events,a group of only children died unexpectedly,a large number of families with only child lost their only child.According to the survey statistics,there are at least one million families who have lost their only child in China.For a variety of reasons,the elderly who have lost their only child can no longer give birth and adopt,and they become depressed because they lack the care and companionship of their children.The elderly who have lost their only child often suffer from an irreversible blow,which seriously affects their life and leads to their self-isolation,disruption of their normal living conditions and depression.This study is a case of depression intervention in the elderly who have lost their only child during the practice of social workers in an association for the loss of their only child(hereinafter referred to as the association).Based on social support theory and advantage perspective theory,this case reconstructed the cognition and social support of the elderly who have lost their only child,and measured the service effect on a scale.During the process,social workers found that the clients were self-isolated,not actively socializing,and weak social support through observation and interview.In response to the problems of service clients,social workers mainly designed service plans from two perspectives.First,social workers made use of the unique advantages of homogeneous groups in the association to help clients open their hearts,actively contact other elderly people who have lost their only child,and encouraged them to have empathy and mutual support,established social networks and social support systems,and gradually got out of the isolation and got spiritual comfort.Second,by using the resources and advantages of the association.The association organized activities to lead the elderly who have lost their only child to serve others and the society.In the process of volunteer activities,the clients built self-esteem and self-confidence,and found the value and meaning of life.Finally,the purpose of relieving clients’ depression and helping clients to restore their normal life order and state is achieved.The study found that the elderly who have lost their only child had difficulty in discovering their potential advantages,and the utilization rate of the surrounding social resources was low.Social workers can use casework methods to tap and utilize the potential and advantages of the elderly who have lost their only child,restore their self-esteem and self-confidence,and encourage them to actively communicate with others and find joy in life.Social workers make use of the social resources of the elderly who have lost their only child,bring into play the role of special organizations such as associations and the power of homogeneous groups,improve the quality of social resources used by the elderly who have lost their only child,and improve their living conditions.
