In the context of the education information era, education and information technology are highly intertwined, and the Horizon report shows that new technologies that will affect education in the future include virtual reality(VR),artificial intelligence(AI),3D printing, and cloud computing. In the traditional chemistry classroom without the introduction of new technologies, teachers’ teaching methods are not new,the teaching environment is boring, and students’ interest in learning is low, while the secondary school curriculum reform requires "student-oriented and happy learning",and the single learning method, the basic chemistry knowledge which is not easily understood by students and abstract cannot effectively mobilize students’ subjective initiative and make Students really achieve the purpose of teaching and learning for fun.The introduction of educational games into students’ learning process not only can effectively stimulate students’ interest in learning chemistry knowledge, but also can cultivate students’ ability to learn chemistry knowledge independently, which is an effective way to improve learning efficiency and meets the requirements of the "student-oriented" curriculum reform.Educational games that incorporate VR technology benefit from the highly immersive, interactive and conceptual nature of VR to help students perceive, build quality and develop their potential. Thus, this study aims to use the characteristics of VR technology to integrate abstract and difficult-to-understand chemistry knowledge into the plot of the game, allowing students to use the Oculus Quest2 VR headset and adopt multimodal interaction forms such as gestural interaction to immerse students in the game situation with multiple senses and master the knowledge in the process of experiencing the game.In the first chapter, the literature on VR educational games and educational games applied in chemistry teaching at home and abroad is analyzed and organized, while typical cases at home and abroad are studied in depth;in the second chapter, the literature research method is used to introduce educational games, virtual reality technology, multimodality and other related concepts and theoretical foundations, analyze the unique advantages of educational games introducing VR technology, and lay the theoretical foundation for subsequent design and development.Chapter 3,through the questionnaire survey method and interview method to understand the current learning status and students’ needs, analyze the students’ characteristics and teaching status, determine the VR educational game design ideas and development principles, and finally select the knowledge point of "Chemical Elements and Human Health" as the game content, followed by the design of game background, game flow, game interface, game scene and game interaction.Chapter 4,using Oculus Quest2 as the headset device, the Unity 3D engine is used to start configuring the environment for development, and the development process of this VR educational game is discussed in detail;Chapter 5,using the experimental research method to apply the developed VR educational game to the actual teaching, the experimental class and the control class, which are at the same knowledge level, are selected as the experimental objects, and after teaching them respectively. After the post-test questions to test the knowledge level of the two classes, collect and organize the data, and summarize the application effect conclusion;Chapter 6,summarize the research content, put forward the shortcomings of this study, and put forward the prospect for future research. The multimodal-based chemistry VR educational game can improve learners’ motivation in an educational and entertaining way, effectively stimulate interest in learning chemistry, and significantly improve learners’ knowledge and ability level. In the application effect satisfaction questionnaire, learners were satisfied with this kind of VR educational game that combines education and entertainment, which proves that it is feasible to use VR educational games to assist learning chemistry knowledge.
