| The media are the main channel for people to obtain information.People’s Daily disseminates the voices of the Party and the government and plays an important role in guiding the public opinion.Based on the discourse-historical approach,this thesis analyses People’s Daily reports on video games,so as to discuss the diachronic changes of the media image of video games.This thesis selects People’s Daily reports on video games from 1978 to 2020 as the data,adopting both qualitative and quantitative analysis.This study discusses the following three aspects: the first is to analyze the media image of video games in People’s Daily;the second is to explore the application and distribution of discourse strategies;and the third is to investigate the interaction between media image and historical context.Through the research,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)From 1978 to 1989,China was in the early stage of reform and opening up,and all undertakings were on track.In this condition,Deng Xiaoping proposed science and technology could be used as an auxiliary tool in education in the report of the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee.As a new type of science and technology,video games were introduced into China.Its advocacy of teaching in fun also agrees with the aims in the report.Therefore,in the first stage,based on the national policies and background,People’s Daily constructs the video games as an entertainment activity,which are beneficial to the development of human physical and mental health mainly through the employment of naming strategy and perspectivization strategy.(2)From 1990 to 2008,video games had entered China for a long time.During this period,video games did not achieve the expected effect,but brought great troubles to parents and schools.In this context,the relevant government departments stipulate that minors are not allowed to enter video game arcades,which shows negative attitude to video games.People’s Daily constructs video games as electronic heroin,which are harmful to teenagers’ health through the employment of naming strategy as well as the topoi of threat and law in argumentation strategy.(3)From 2009 to 2020,based on Asian financial crisis and South Korea’s and Japan’s commitment to developing cultural power,cultural output became very important.In this condition,People’s Daily constructs video games as a legitimate cultural industry and an important part of China’s cultural output through perspectivization strategy as well as the topoi of law and usefulness in argumentation strategy... |
