Abstract/Summary:
According to the General Senior High School English Curriculum Standard(2020),development of cultural consciousness is one of the core competences of the English subject.In response to the promulgation of that element in the new General Senior High School English Curriculum Standard(2020),and in light of the current prominence of ideological and political education and cultivation of the core socialist values,English teachers should shoulder the responsibility of promoting excellent Traditional Chinese culture in class,as well as developing students’ acceptance of such culture,their capacity to spread it and to improve their cross-cultural communication ability on top of cultivating students’ language competency.For the above reasons,it is of great significance to study the content and teaching strategies of Chinese traditional culture in the new high school English textbooks.The literature research and textual analysis were conducted to discover the research methods of analyzing traditional Chinese culture content and culture teaching in textbooks from previous studies.Questionnaire surveys and interviews were used to find out the current situation of teaching traditional Chinese culture in senior high school English class.This paper aims at the following questions:1.What’s the content of traditional Chinese culture in the new English textbooks ?2.What are the problems in teaching traditional Chinese culture in senior high school English class ?3.What are the effective teaching strategies of teaching traditional Chinese culture in High school English class?The author used the new curriculum standard and the classification standard of traditional Chinese culture summarized by the scholar Niu Xinsheng to analyze the types,distribution,the cultural presentation,and the unit thematic context of Chinese traditional culture in the textbook.The 220 teachers’ questionnaires were quantitatively analyzed by using the SPSS statistical software,and the data of interviews with 8 teachers were qualitatively analyzed.According to the content of the traditional Chinese culture in the textbook,and based on the theory of deep learning and constructivism,the author designed four teaching cases with the themes of festival,great people,regional culture and culture-loaded words to illustrate the different teaching strategies.The results are as follows:(1)Content of Chinese traditional culture is widely distributed in the input part(listening,reading and video time)and output part(speaking,writing,project)of the textbooks,and the proportion of input(55%)and output(45%)is relatively balanced.The new textbooks contain rich types of traditional Chinese culture.Combined with the unit themes,the research on the teaching of traditional Chinese culture mainly focused on material culture,concept culture and behavior culture.(2)The senior high school English teachers have a high awareness of doing Chinese culture teaching,but most of them feel inadequate in the ability to express Chinese culture in English,and they seldom use specific teaching strategies to teach culture.(3)Based on the problems of teaching Chinese traditional culture in English class,the author puts forward the teaching strategies of Cultural Comparison,Cultural Narration,Cultural Penetration and Thematic Project,which can a)provide some references for teachers to implement traditional Chinese culture teaching based on the unit theme,b)contribute to improving teachers’ and students’ English expression ability of Chinese traditional culture,and c)spread excellent traditional Chinese culture.
