The New English Curriculum Standard(2017 Version Revised in 2020)emphasizes that the implementation of the fundamental task is to cultivate people,and cultivate socialist builders and successors with Chinese feelings,international perspectives and cross-cultural communication skills.Based on the goal,the development of the core literacy of the four major English subjects of students is the focus of the current English education reform.Among them,the cultural awareness literacy requires students to have a strong cultural self-confidence,and the ability of cross-cultural communication and to spread Chinese culture.High school English textbooks are an important carrier of English knowledge and culture,and the reasonable arrangement of cultural content can promote English learning.Therefore,it is necessary to study the cultural content of English textbooks.Based on the background,this study aims to study the integration of Chinese cultural content in NSE(New Standard English)high school English textbooks,in order to bring some suggestions for cultural teaching and textbook compilation.Therefore,this study starts with textbooks evaluation,starting from the perspective of the cultural awareness of English core literacy,and combining the requirements for cultural learning in the NECS(2017 Version Revised in 2020),then proposes the two research questions: 1)How is Chinese culture integrated in NSE high school English textbooks? 2)What attitudes do high school students and teachers hold towards the integration of Chinese culture in NSE high school English textbooks? Based on some textbook evaluation theories,in terms of internal evaluation,the first question mainly discusses the current situation of Chinese culture in NSE(presentation,distribution,proportion,and themes).In terms of external evaluation,the questionnaires were distributed to 138 teachers and 262 students who used the textbook in Sichuan Province.The purpose of the two sets of questionnaires is to investigate the evaluation of teachers and students on the integration of Chinese culture.Through the study,it is found that: 1)In terms of the integration of Chinese cultural content in NSE,compared with the old version of NSE,the proportion of Chinese culture is improved,especially in reading and speaking activities;in terms of cultural proportion,the proportion of cultural input in the target language country is approximately twice of the proportion of Chinese culture,so the proportion of cultural input is relatively appropriate;it is lacking in the way of presentation,mainly based on vocabulary and pictures;it is single in the theme,mainly concentrated in spiritual and conceptual culture.2)In terms of evaluation of teachers,they are satisfied with the presentation of Chinese culture,and the proportion can meet their teaching needs,but teachers think that Chinese culture is not systematic enough,and in terms of theme,textbook can expand the content of spiritual and social culture.3)In terms of evaluation of students,they are satisfied with the presentation of Chinese culture too,but hope to add some buzz words and vivid paintings that keep pace with the times;structurally,students hope to expand the content about the contrast between Chinese and Western cultures and world culture;in terms of theme,students do not want to always talk about friendship and health,but hope to add some topics that promote the development of critical and creative thinking;the proportion of Chinese culture can not meet their learning needs,and a certain amount can be added to the listening and writing tasks.Based on the above research results,this study puts forward the following implications.For teachers,they should pay more attention to Chinese cultural teaching,improve their literary literacy,and learn some cultural teaching methods.For textbook compilation,editors should select Chinese culture from multiple perspectives,enrich the presentation of Chinese culture,and design some appropriate teaching activities. |
